Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week
Jayden Nishi

* Jayden Nishi, a 2023 grad at South High in Torrance, California, went 5-0 in the circle last week helping the team capture the TNT Tournament championships.

Her performance included three shutouts as she gave up just three earned runs, finishing with a 0.75 ERA for the tournament. Jayden also struck out 24 in 28 innings with shutouts over Banning and Redondo Union during pool play, and then shut out hard-hitting Gahr High in the quarter finals.

Jayden then gave up one earned run to Riverside Poly in the semi-finals, and two to El Segundo in the championship game win.

For the year, the junior is 10-0 with a 0.6 ERA. She has 46 strikeouts in 55 innings against just 13 walks and has five total shutouts on the year. South High remains unbeaten as a Division 1 CIF-Southern Section team.

Head Coach Scott Hayward says that the pitcher has elevated her game this season.

“The biggest thing Jayden is doing this year that she didn’t always do last year is believing in herself,” he begins. “Her spin, command and ability to change speeds are top-notch, and she had flashes of brilliance last year. But she was inconsistent because she lacked confidence.”

“She came in this year clearly with a different mindset,” the coach continues. “I think last year she just didn’t want to let anyone down, and it’s pretty hard to play when your approach is hoping nothing bad happens, instead of expecting to play well all the time, and just dealing with challenges that arise.

“This year she came out to lead. She knows our lineup will score runs for her and make plays behind her, and that they all have her back. She trusts herself, and that’s all it took. Jayden is pitching like the winner she is.”

The South squad is loaded with talent including seven other standouts who are Extra Innings Elite 100 players or Extra Innings Elite position players in Alyssa Yee, an OF ranked #90 in the 2022 class; Jaden Moore, #22 first basemen in the 2022 class; Avary Weisbrook, #40 in the 2022 class and a SS going to Florida State; Devin Elam, #97 catcher in the 2022 class; Paige Hayward, an OF/1B ranked #38 in the 2023 class and Isabella Cacatian, a C/3B ranked #35 in the 2025 class.
