Former Salisbury head coach Margie Knight passed away over the weekend.
Multiple social media posts, including from both Salisbury program alumni and Knight’s family members, confirmed her passing.
Knight was a legendary figure at Salisbury, a Division III program, where she was elected to the program’s Hall of Fame for her efforts as an athlete and later went on to a decades-long coaching career.
A 1979 graduate of Salisbury, Knight played basketball, softball, and volleyball as a student-athlete, lettering multiple times in each sport. She was inducted into the Salisbury Hall of Fame in 1995 for her accomplishments as a player, which included twice being named the Most Valuable Player on the basketball team and once the MVP of the softball roster.
Under Knight’s guidance, the Salisbury program reached the NCAA tournament nearly two-dozen times and recorded more than 800 wins. For a four-year stretch from 2012-15, Knight and her coaching staff were named the Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year annually by the NFCA.
A 14-time conference Coach of the Year, Knight also was the Sea Gulls’ volleyball coach from 1997-2012 and led that program to eight conference titles and eight NCAA tournament appearances.
Knight retired from Salisbury following the 2020 season. She was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
