Alexis Michaud was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, a rare bone cancer that has since led to her spending almost 20 hours in surgery – in just two days’ time – to remove a tumor and repair damage.
The 17-year-old softball pitcher, thanks to her brave battle with cancer, had the opportunity to make a wish through the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Michaud knew what she wanted to wish for: Renovations to her high school softball field.
Maranacook Community High School’s field needs new bleachers, better drainage, and other upgrades. Even with the battle that she has fought over the last year, Michaud chose to focus her wish on bettering the place she plays.
Maine’s Make-A-Wish chapter presented Michaud with new uniforms in April and a new electronic scoreboard in June for the field. Kennebec Savings Bank, a financial institution in the community, led the way in fundraising and gave $10,000 towards the improvement efforts.
A GoFundMe page started this week to help raise the remaining necessary funds said of Michaud, “Alexis was told she would never play sports again, BUT because she is a fighter, she rehabbed and fought her way back to the pitching mound, albeit with little to no mobility in her neck. That has not stopped her! She is a testament to hard work and determination and has refused to stand idle while thinking not of herself but of others in her community.”
The GoFundMe page has raised nearly $1,300 in three days, toward a set goal of $50,000. To view or contribute to the fundraiser, click here.
