Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week
Naming Cassidy McLellan, the outstanding senior centerfielder for the Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton, Fla.) Mustangs, as an Extra Inning Softball HS Player of the Week has been an annual tradition.

For the third year in a row, the Florida Gator signee has been chosen for the award after previously winning it last year (April 26, 2022) and the year before that (May 25, 2021).
Big shoes to fill, albeit her own, but the third time being honored is equally well deserved.
Last week, Cassidy went 6-for-7 (.857 batting average) and added a walk as well as a big home run for her Mustangs team in a pair of victories.
The home run was a walk-off grand slam to defeat Riverview High and, all told, the future Gator had the big homer, three doubles, two singles and four stolen bases.
For the season—through her first 18 games played—Cassidy is batting a strong .569 with a .658 on-base percentage and a 1.675 OPS. Of her 33 hits, 10 have been doubles, four home runs and two triples.
The senior also has 15 walks showing opponents pitch very carefully to her, but when she gets on via the free pass especially, she makes them pay as she has 21 steals already and scored 29 runs.
But, talk to the athlete, and she couldn’t tell you any of the above impressive numbers… on purpose and for a reason.
“I never look at my stats during the season,” Cassidy explains. “My parents, coaches and teammates know not to bring them up. Not really sure why… I guess it’s just a weird superstition I have.”

It’s not that she doesn’t have goals or use stats as a motivating factor; on the contrary, she is gunning after some records set by former Lakewood Ranch star and current junior starter for the Florida Gator, Avery Goelz.
“I did have a personal goal at the beginning of the season and that was to knock off some of Avery’s records that she has here at Lakewood Ranch High. I think she owns all of them other than the pitching ones, but I’m going to have to wait till the end of the season to find out.”
As an aside, Cassidy adds:
“You are welcome to put my stats in any articles, as I’ve gotten pretty good at not listening or seeing them (laughs)!”
After back-to-back state titles, this season has had its ups and downs, the three-time National Player of the Week admits.
“I think losing (former Head) Coach TJ (Goelz) and a lot of starters from last season is a major reason for our slower start to this season. Our team goal is to win our third title and I think we are starting to click now. We’re practicing better, our in-game hitting, pitching and fielding are better and I’m hoping, fingers crossed, we’re ready to make another run for states.”
“This will be a bittersweet ending either way,” Cassidy concludes. “I absolutely loved my time playing here at Lakewood Ranch HS and, win or lose our last game, my memories will last forever—especially the friendships with my Mustang teammates. A new softball chapter for me will start this fall, though; Go Gators!”
