Four weeks into the season and the softball world got stood on its head as Louisiana ended Oklahoma’s NCAA record 71-game winning streak with a 7-5 win in eight innings at Love’s Field. The Sooners obviously weren’t going to win every game for the rest of eternity, but at times it felt like that would be the case.

Several other schools have caught our attention with a special nod to the state of North Carolina. North Carolina State, under first-year head coach Lindsay Leftwich, opened ACC play with a 6-1 victory over Clemson. The Tigers bounced back to take the series, but game three was a back-and-forth affair in which Clemson emerged with a 14-9 victory. The Wolfpack are currently 14-5 on the season and host another upstart in Georgia Tech this weekend.

Meanwhile up the road in Chapel Hill, North Carolina the Tar Heels improved to 16-3 on the season following wins over Lafayette and Campbell to cap the weekend. UNC, under first-year head coach Megan Smith Lyon, is off to the best start to a season since the 2010 campaign and the Tar Heels host Furman and Virginia this week.

Another team that has caught the attention of the softball world is the California Golden Bears. Cal is currently 19-2 on the season and is ranked in the Top 25 in all four national polls. The Bears defeated Virginia Tech earlier in the season and then handed Georgia a 7-2 loss this past weekend.

The Bears travel to Eugene, Ore., this weekend as it opens Pac-12 play against Oregon.

But our focus this week is on the players and coaches who have etched their names into the record books.

All Hail, Kiki Milloy

During the opening weekend of the season at the Mary Nutter Classic, Tennessee star Kiki Milloy belted a home run against Loyola Marymount to move into first place on the Vols career home runs list. At the time, the home run pushed her career total to 58 and moved her past Meghan Gregg into the top spot on the career list. Milloy has since hit six more home runs and her career total stands at 64.
