No one ever said it was going to be easy.
Firecrackers Brashear OF Corissa Sweet’s recruiting journey that ended up with her landing a scholarship from Long Beach State was filled with roadblocks and hurdles, but she never gave up hope.
“There were a lot of setbacks in my recruiting journey,” said Sweet, who helped Firecrackers Brashear/Oakes win the PGF 14U Platinum national championship in 2017.
“First, the new rule came out when I was a freshman, so I couldn’t commit until my junior year. Then, when I was finally able to commit, I tore my labrum and was in need of surgery. After a six-month recovery, I was finally back on the field. I played high school ball for about two months until the season was cancelled due to COVID.”
Sweet doubled her efforts in the recruiting process over the phone, video, Zoom and social media.
“Recruiting was difficult from that point on since colleges were unable to do in-person recruiting,” Sweet said. “So, I sent out videos every week to college coaches in hope to interest them. Thankfully, I had sparked some interest with several schools, one of them being Long Beach State.”
Sweet plans to close out her senior season strong at El Dorado High, California this spring and then go after a national title with Firecrackers Brashear in the summer.
After that, she’ll be staying in Southern California to play for The Beach…

What were some of the things you were looking for in a college?
I wanted to play for a program that is competitive on the field as well as in the classroom. Being able to play big-time softball is important to me, but so is getting a good education. I also wanted to stay in California because I love the atmosphere, and I love that my family will be able to be at my games to support me.
