Rich Calvert Departs as Drake Head Coach

Rich Calvert is stepping down as head coach at Drake.

Calvert spent twenty-one years as the Bulldogs’ leader, picking up 567 wins during his tenure. He took over the program in 2003 and sits as the 5th-winningest-coach in Missouri Valley Conference history.

“After careful consideration, I have determined this is a good time to step away from the softball program and pursue other opportunities,” Calvert said in a statement. “For 21 years, I have enjoyed my time at Drake and leave with many great memories and friendships. I look forward to the next chapter of my life, both personally and professionally.”

Under Calvert’s tutelage, the Bulldogs won conference regular-season championships in 2015 and 2018, with conference tournament titles coming in 2008 and ’18. Calvert’s staff was named the conference Coaching Staff of the Year four times, most recently in 2019.

Prior to his decades-long tenure at Drake, Calvert served as an assistant coach at Illinois State, Ohio State, and Iowa.
