Salisbury University on Saturday announced plans to name their softball stadium after the legendary and late Margie Knight.
Knight coached the Sea Gulls for twenty-five years, leading the program to 846 wins, eighteen conference championships, twenty-one NCAA tournament appearances, and nine D3 World Series berths.
Inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018, Knight retired from the SU program following the 2020 season, but stayed on as an assistant coach under new head coach Lacey Lord – a program alum – before passing away in 2022.
“Coach Knight was more than just a coach to me,” Lord, who played at Salisbury from 2003-06 and returned as head coach in 2020, said in a statement. “She was a friend and a mentor who showed me what it meant to succeed both on the field and in life. There is no way to thank someone like Margie for how much of an impact they had on you, but I think this is a wonderful tribute to one of the greatest to ever coach.”
A 1979 graduate of Salisbury, Knight was a three-sport athlete, playing softball; basketball; and volleyball. She was inducted into the SU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995 and returned to the school in 1997 as softball and volleyball coach. In addition to her near-850 wins on the softball diamond, she also led the Sea Gulls’ volleyball program to 405 wins and eight NCAA tournament appearances in sixteen years as head coach.
Per a Salisbury press release, the stadium will be officially renamed “Margie Knight Sea Gull Softball Stadium“; a formal renaming ceremony will be held in the fall.
