Why Social Media Matters

The recruiting process has changed—and it’s moving fast. According to the NCAA, over 70% of college coaches use social media during evaluation. Your Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter profile can now be your first impression. Coaches want to see how you train, how you compete, and how you carry yourself. What you share matters. Using social media to get recruited doesn’t take perfection—it just takes intention.

Tip 1: Post Highlight Clips

Game footage shows your skill set in action in a way that stats and scouting reports can’t. Coaches want to see how you move, how you react under pressure, and how you compete in live situations. A well-timed clip can give them a fast and effective snapshot of your abilities.

Keep videos short—ideally under 30 seconds—to grab attention quickly. Film from a clear angle that showcases your mechanics and athleticism. Behind the backstop, down the baseline, or just above eye level are great spots for clean footage.

Always include your grad year, position, and team name either in the caption or overlaid on the video. Whether it’s a home run, a heads-up base running moment, a diving catch, or a three-pitch strikeout, make sure it tells a complete and compelling story in just a few seconds. Posting just one great clip each week can increase visibility fast.

You don’t need a professional setup. Just a smartphone, steady hands (or a tripod), and a little consistency can help you stand out from the crowd.

Tip 2: Share Training Content

Post snippets of your workouts, private lessons, or team practices to give coaches a behind-the-scenes look at how you’re improving. This kind of content shows discipline, focus, and a real drive to get better—even when no one is watching. It tells a college coach that you’re not just showing up on game day—you’re putting in the work every day.

Even a 10-second clip from the batting cage, bullpen, or gym can speak volumes about your effort. These short training posts don’t need to be flashy. Just make sure they’re clear, consistent, and authentic. Focus on drills that highlight your fundamentals—whether it’s glove work, hitting mechanics, speed and agility, or mobility.

Coaches want players who are coachable and willing to grind. By posting steady progress over time, you help them see your trajectory. One training post per week is an easy, efficient way to build credibility and stay top of mind with recruiters. It’s not about perfection—it’s about persistence.

Tip 3: Use Captions That Inform

Every time you post, you’re building your online brand—so don’t skip the caption. Always include your grad year, primary position(s), travel team, and whether you’re committed or uncommitted. This simple habit helps college coaches identify and evaluate you faster, without having to dig for details.

Think of your caption as your personal business card. It should tell recruiters exactly who you are and what you bring to the table. A strong example might be: “Working on glove speed today! 2027 SS/2B | Georgia Impact | Uncommitted.”This kind of caption instantly answers a coach’s most important questions.

You can also use captions to highlight other qualities—like leadership, hustle, or a big academic win. For example: “Staying consistent in the cage after school 💪 4.2 GPA | 2026 OF/1B | Uncommitted.” When done right, your caption becomes a fast, effective way to tell your story and stand out in a crowded recruiting space.

Over time, using clear and consistent captions creates a stronger personal brand and helps coaches track your progress. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference.

Tip 4: Promote Your Schedule

Let recruiters know where and when they can see you play. Posting your tournament schedule is one of the simplest, smartest ways to get noticed. Coaches are often planning their weekends based on who they want to evaluate, so sharing your location gives them a reason to come watch.

Include key details like the name of the tournament, city and field complex, game times, jersey number, and team name. A sample post might say: “Playing in the Top Gun Invitational this weekend in Kansas City! Game 1 at 10 a.m. on Field 3 | #12 | Mojo 2027 Gold.”

Make it even easier for coaches to find you by tagging the event account, your team’s profile, and any teammates in the post. This not only helps expand your reach but also keeps your content visible in the event’s social media feed.

Reposting the schedule from your team or organization is fine, but adding a personal caption helps coaches connect your name with your play. Even better—follow up after the weekend with a quick post about how it went. Keeping your profile updated with game information shows initiative and keeps you top of mind.

Tip 5: Pin Your Key Info

Your profile should include:

  • Grad year
  • Position(s)
  • GPA (if strong)
  • Contact info or coach contact
  • Link to your highlight reel

Your social media profile should function like a quick, clean resume for college coaches. When recruiters visit your page, they’re scanning for a few key details—and if they can’t find them fast, they’ll move on. Make it easy for them to learn who you are by pinning your most important information right at the top.

At a minimum, include your grad year, primary and secondary positions, and your travel or high school team. If you have a strong GPA (typically 3.5 or higher), include that as well—it shows academic responsibility, which matters in the recruiting process. You should also add a direct contact method, whether that’s your email or your coach’s information.

You can either place this information in your bio or create a pinned post that stays at the top of your feed. Add a clear caption with your name, position, grad year, and a brief description of the content in the video. This simple setup gives coaches a fast, efficient way to evaluate your potential—without needing to scroll through your entire profile. It shows you’re organized, serious, and ready to be recruited.

Tip 6: Avoid Red Flags

Inappropriate language, drama, or negativity on social media can quickly damage your recruiting chances. College coaches are not just looking for talented athletes—they want players who will positively represent their program and community. Posts that include bad language, arguments, or disrespectful behavior create red flags that coaches will notice immediately.

Remember, everything you post is part of your online reputation. Even comments on others’ posts or sharing controversial content can be seen as a risk. Before you post or comment, pause and ask yourself: Does this show the best version of me? If the answer is no, it’s better to keep it private.

Using social media to get recruited means demonstrating maturity, responsibility, and positivity. Coaches want athletes who bring energy, leadership, and a strong work ethic—not distractions. Building a profile that reflects those qualities takes just a little extra effort but makes a huge difference in how recruiters see you. Keeping your feed professional and upbeat will help you stand out for all the right reasons.

Tip 7: Show Who You Are

While skill and work ethic are essential, college coaches also want to see the person behind the player. Sprinkle your social media with posts that highlight your personality and leadership. Sharing moments like team celebrations, warmup routines you lead, or speeches you give shows you’re a positive force in the clubhouse.

Don’t hesitate to post about achievements beyond the field. Academic honors like making the Honor Roll, participation in volunteer work, or community service projects give coaches a fuller picture of who you are. These posts demonstrate that you’re dedicated to growth in all areas of life, not just softball.

Remember, coaches want players who will contribute both on and off the field. Showing your values, character, and teamwork through your social media makes your profile unforgettable. It helps recruiters imagine you as a teammate, leader, and role model for their program. Even small glimpses into your personality can create big opportunities.

Control Your First Impression

In today’s fast-paced recruiting world, using social media to get recruited is no longer optional—it’s essential. By sharing well-crafted highlight clips, consistent training content, and clear, informative captions, athletes create a powerful online presence that captures college coaches’ attention quickly. Keeping your schedule updated and pinning key information makes it easy for recruiters to find and evaluate you, while avoiding negativity and showcasing your true personality builds trust and connection beyond the field.

Remember, your social media profile is your personal brand and first impression. Being intentional with what you post reflects maturity, work ethic, and leadership—qualities every coach values. For athletes serious about standing out in the recruiting process, following these strategies is a fast, simple way to boost visibility and open doors.
