The Terrific Ten has you covered on all the best highlights from all the action across college softball on Tuesday!

1. Hot Bats Smash Georgia Tech to Victory over Georgia

Georgia Tech has been playing much better than their 0-6 ACC record show, but even Yellow Jacket fans had to be (pleasantly) surprised at their team’s performance on Tuesday night. In Athens to take on archrival Georgia, the Yellow Jackets exploded for 12 runs, including an 8-run second inning, and took home a run-rule victory.

Caroline Davis and Emma Kauf were the big home run-hitters of the night, with Davis knocking a grand slam that made the game 8-0, while Kauf hit a 3-run shot that took the score, at that time, to 11-0. The win was GT’s first in the rivalry series since 2012.

2. The Pupil has Beaten the Maestro

Nebraska’s trip to San Diego was a monumental day for both program’s head coaches. For USD’s MJ Knighten, she would lead her team against her alma mater for the first time. For Nebraska’s Rhonda Revelle, she got to see a growing branch on her coaching tree in action.

The home team ended the day with a smile on their faces, with San Diego sweeping the doubleheader and recording two wins. Knighten’s Toreros posted a 4-2 victory in game one, then beat the Cornhuskers 4-0 in game two of the day. In the second game, USD pitcher Courtney Rose recorded her first shutout of the season, allowing just six hits and collecting four strikeouts.

3. UNCG upsets Charlotte; Breneman Earns Milestone Win

UNCG has taken some lumps this season, but have had a largely-successful beginning to their year. Sitting at 16-4 entering Tuesday, the Spartans traveled to Charlotte to take on the 49ers, a team that has been ranked in the top 25 multiple times this season. The Spartans did not waste time on offense, scoring twice in the first inning. After allowing Charlotte to get on the board with a single run in the bottom of the frame, it was all Spartan-scoring from then on. UNCG added three runs in the fourth, scored twice in the sixth, and added an extra insurance run in the seventh en route to the 8-1 victory.

The win also marked head coach Janelle Breneman’s 300th victory as the UNCG head coach.

4. Ranked Team vs. Ranked Team goes UCF’s way

Ohio State is in Florida on a week-long visit, playing tournaments in Tampa in two consecutive weekends. The Buckeyes also played a midweek against UCF in Orlando, a matchup of two teams ranked in the Extra Inning Softball Top 25 this week.

The face-off went the Knights’ way, with UCF bursting out to an 11-3 victory. The Knights’ bats poured it on, scoring in five of the six innings played. The Ohio State pitching, which has been fairly solid in the season’s early-goings, collapsed on Tuesday night, giving up nine earned runs on twelve hits and six walks. Shannon Doherty and Ashleigh Griffin led the way offensively for UCF, with Doherty going 3-4 with two doubles and three RBI and Griffin also going 3-4 with a home run and four RBI.

Sam Hackenbracht hit a pair of home runs for OSU, both solo shots in the first and third innings.

5. Hannah George Said “No, No”

North Carolina had not seen a no-hitter thrown in their program since 2013. Hannah George had never thrown one in college. Both stats were upended on Tuesday night. George threw her first career no-no against UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, holding the Seahawks batters at bay and buoying her team to a 2-0 victory. George recorded seven strikeouts in the affair, allowing just two base runners, both via walks. With the win, her season’s record moved to 9-0 and UNC now stands five games above .500 on the year.
