14U CLUB SCOUTING REPORT

Extra Inning Softball recently released the Extra Elite Eighty 14U Club Rankings last week, so let’s take a look at Coach Kevin Pirkey‘s team …

CAL BREEZE 2023

Extra Elite Eighty 14U Club Ranking: 60
2019 Fall Record: 25-9-2 with notable wins over Firecrackers-Ricks, 2-1, Grapettes-Gann/Kapp, 10-5, and went 3-2 playing against 16U/18U teams.
2019 Summer Record: 46-33
Top Finishes: 2nd place at PGF Phill Mumma Memorial

Returners:

  • Gracie Hopkins (2023, P/2B/OF, a pitbull in the circle who attacks batters with a mix of spins. She’s equally as tenacious fielding at 2B and in the outfield, routinely making extra effort plays. She had a 7-3 record with a 2.89 ERA in the fall)
  • Cheyenne Coldren (2023, C/3B/1B, a rock solid foundation behind the plate for our defense, and she has the versatility and ability to play 3B/1B without missing a beat. She hit .324 in the fall)
  • Hailey Pirkey (2023, P/OF, the catalyst for the offense by consistently getting on base and driving in runs. She’s a fixture at the top of our lineup, and has often performed her best against top competition. She led the team batting .512 and with an OPS of 1.209 in the fall)
  • Sarah O’Dea (2023, OF/3B, a powerful player both offensively and defensively. She can drive the ball through the infield or into a gap, and relishes opportunities to throw out runners from the outfield. She batted .330 in the fall)
  • Kaye Manuel (2023, SS/OF, the team’s lead-off batter and has been vital to jump starting the offense. She has also been very smooth holding down the middle defensively. She batted .444 with 16 stolen bases in the fall)
  • Tori Ceasri (2023, 3B/C, a starting-caliber catcher who also excels at 3B, using her strong arm both behind the plate and at the corner. She’s also a solid hitter with power and is a run producing machine. She batted .420 with a team high 23 RBIs in the fall)

Newcomers:

  • Josie Koelewyn (2023, P/3B, a power pitcher who works all four directions in the zone. She has been a huge addition to the team as a pitcher and in the lineup. She batted .397 with 22 RBIs in the fall)
  • Katie McCaw (2023, P, a mix of a power pitcher with solid spins from the left side. She recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts in a one-hit game this fall)
  • Morgan Sweet (2023, 1B/3B, made her presence felt after joining the team as she hit four home runs and screaming line drives. She’s athletic, powerful and is quickly adapting to the national level competition)
  • JJ Pina (2023, 3B/1B, a late addition to the team, but wasted no time displaying her power at the plate. She batted .385 and cemented her spot in the lineup)
  • Emerson Meggers (2023, 2B/SS/OF, returned to the organization after a brief hiatus. She’s a savvy defender who makes difficult plays look easy and has always been a consistent performer at the plate)

What will it take for your team to be successful this year?
We try to keep our message simple with the Three Ps: Passion, Persistent and Perform. We aim to stoke the passion in our athletes not only for the game but the process involved. We are persistent in our routines, expectations and standards. We choose to travel and play top competition, but we aim to perform regardless of who or where we are playing.

Who is your No. 1 pitcher and can you describe her skills? Who are the other pitchers on your staff and can you describe their skills?
We are fortunate to have a three-headed staff. They are all #1 caliber and they have all sacrificed for each other to be a part of a staff. Gracie has the most big-game experience and she has thrown the most innings for us. She spins the ball well and locates with consistency. She is a gamer and always wants the ball. Josie has excellent velocity and mixes in spins in all four directions. She’s had dominant outings for us and looks to be a big piece to our summer success. Katie mixes velocity and spins and as a lefty presents a different look than others.

Can you describe your offense and what some of the strengths are?
We are deep with quality hitters. We are more than a contact team as we have power from top to bottom in our lineup. We are not built around one batter, so we share the load well and create offensive attacks every inning.

IT’S “CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP” TIME!

It’s time for TLI to highlight the “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” warriors from around the country:
