EXTRA ELITE SPOTLIGHT: ALEA JOHNSON

LSU-bound P Alea Johnson, #7 in the 2022 Extra Elite 100, helped Birmingham Thunderbolts 18U Premier win PGF Nationals this summer and she recently talked to Extra Inning Softball about her club team, being a good teammate, improving her consistency, PGF Nationals, Nebraska Gold, going to college, Giselle “G” Juarez and Soulja Boy.

Honors: 1st Team 7A All State; 1st Team All-Coastal and 7A All-County.

Travel Ball Highlights/Summer Stats: 1.54 ERA, 77 strikeouts, batting average against .127 and 39 BB.

High School Spring Highlights/Stats: Pitching — 15-2, 0.69 ERA, 9 shutouts, 2 no-hitters, 1 perfect game, 102 IP, 204 strikeouts; Batting — .458 AVG, 12 doubles, 4 home runs and 20 BB.

Tell us about your travel team/organization and how you became involved with them? I joined the Thunderbolts when I was in 10U. We had just played against them and they asked if I wanted to pick up with them for a few weekends. After picking up with them, they asked me to join the team. I’ve been with them ever since.

What do you bring to the team? I strive to be a good teammate and to encourage others and pick them up when they are down.

What areas were you focusing on/trying to improve this summer? This summer, I tried to improve my consistency and making every pitch count.

Can you tell us about your experience at this PGF Nationals this summer? This past PGF Nationals was unbelievable! We had great team chemistry and we set our goals and didn’t let anything stop us. It was such a great way to end our last travel ball tournament together.

Which player/team was your toughest opponent and why? I think our toughest component was Nebraska Gold because we were both undefeated going into that game and, on top of that, they won PGF last year.

What are your goals for the future? My goals for the future are to go to college, work hard and to continue to grow as a person and player.

Who is your sports hero and why? My sports hero is Giselle “G” Juarez. This past season I was blessed with the opportunity to learn from her. She taught me a lot in both the physical and mental aspects of the game. I’m so grateful that I was able to spend time and work with her.

What’s the best hype song and why? The best hype song is “Turn My Swag On” by Soulja Boy because it’s very upbeat and a song you can dance to.

Do you have a secret talent/skill? I don’t have any secret talents or skills.
