EXTRA INNING SCOUTING REPORT

With the 2020 high school softball season approaching, TLI will be taking a look at some of the top teams in the country with the Extra Inning Scouting Report.

TLI went to the Trinity League media day at Mater Dei High of Santa Ana, CA, on Tuesday to talk to all of the league’s coaches and star players.

Today TLI will take a look at Rosary Academy of Fullerton, CA, which is led by head coach Tom Tice, who has guided the Royals to seven league titles, a CIF-SS finals appearance in 1998 and two trips to the CIF-SS semifinals in his 21 years. Rosary Academy went 9-18 overall and 0-8 in the Trinity League in 2019, but the Royals have picked up some transfers and have some talented veterans back, so they could be a team on the rise in 2020.

Let’s get to the Extra Inning Scouting Report of …

ROSARY ACADEMY

Top Returners:

  • Bryn Boznanski (2020, 1B, .459 avg, 7 HR, 10 2B, 27 Runs, 22 RBIs)
  • Bella Fuentes (2022, 3B, .380 avg, 12 2B, 18 Runs, 12 RBIs)
  • Martina Gutierrez (2022, SS, .260 avg, 10 Runs, 13 RBIs)
  • Jaiden Lopez (2022, 2B, .304 avg, 21 Runs, 10 RBIs)
  • Melissa Hanson (2022, OF, .340 avg, 11 Runs, 14 RBIs)
  • Kathryn Davis (2020, DP, .250 avg, 11 RBIs)

Top Newcomers:

  • Nicole Rodriguez (2020, UTL, played for Norco High, CA, as sophomore; played basketball only for Rosary last year)
  • Lanna Martinez (2022, P, transferred from Santa Fe High of Santa Fe Springs, CA)
  • Hannah Hernandez (2022, CF, transferred from La Serna High of Whittier, CA)
  • Aaliyah Ruiz (2022, LF, transferred from Roosevelt High of Eastvale, CA)
  • Natalie Romero (2023, P)
  • Danica Silvestri (2023, C)

What will it take for your team to be successful this season? Our young pitchers will have to rise to the challenge of top-notch OC softball. Our defense will be stout, but our offense will have to manufacture runs. Nicole Rodriguez will be a nice wild card who will make both offense and defense better, once basketball is finished.

Bella Fuentes hit .380 last year.

Who is your No. 1 pitcher and what can you tell me about her skills? Who else could see some time in the circle? Natalie Romero will get the first shot, and then Lanna Martinez will join her after the SOP (transfer sit-out period) ends. Both of them dominate both sides of the plate and they can get batters out by going up, down or slow.

What can we expect from your offense? Hannah Hernandez will lead the team in runs, walks, steals and on-base percentage as a lefty slapper. Boznanski, Fuentes, Gutierrez, Rodriguez and Ruiz have big league pop.

Did you pick up any impact transfers or did you lose any players to transfers? All three of our transfers will have a huge impact; no one transferred out.

Who are the potential All-Section/All-District/All-State players on your team? Boznanski, Fuentes, Hernandez, Gutierrez, Romero and Martinez.

Signed and Committed Players: Bryn Boznanski, Notre Dame; and Nicole Rodriguez, LMU (for basketball).

Tell us about your favorite moment with your high school team?
My favorite moment with my high school team has to be on our preseason trip to Las Vegas to play Bishop Gorman High this year. On this trip, we got to play some softball as well as bring the team together for three days with fun team activities like riding the roller coaster at New York, New York and seeing the fountain show at the Bellagio. Our team makes this trip annually and it is a great team-bonding experience.
