NEWS & NOTES
TLI has been busy collecting information for the Extra Elite Eighty 16U Club Rankings, which begin running on Monday, so we have a bunch of interesting factoids on teams from around the country.
Let’s take a look at a sampling…
***Impact Gold National-Jones is expected to be one of top 16U teams in the nation. “Every player on our team is assigned a nickname if they don’t join us with one that fits them appropriately,” Impact Gold coach Steve Jones said. “The names are usually chosen based on some characteristic of the player and becomes a term of endearment.”
Two pitchers, he says, have particularly good nicknames.
“Lexie Warncke (2023) is ‘Sug ‘(short for sugar because of how amazingly sweet she is considering how cutthroat she can be in the circle) and a very talented newcomer, Ava Hernandez (2023) is ‘Ice’ because of how amazingly cool she always seems in the circle in pressure situations and how cool and laid back she is!”
***Four of the players on Ohana Tigers Gold-Holloway/Contreras’ roster have been with the club since 6U and 7U.
***Michela Barbanente, a 2023 SS/UT for Beverly Bandits Premier-Conroy, was national finalist for the Spelling Bee Championship. “She is special,” Bandits coach Bill Conroy said.
***Impact Gold National-Watson went 30-7-2 last summer and 18-4 in the fall. “I have a core group of girls that is the backbone of this squad,” Impact Gold coach Kit Watson said. “This group of girls have played together since 9u softball. Keeping a group like this together in today’s softball world is something special.”
