EXTRA SPOTLIGHT: MATAIA LAWSON
MIF/3B/CF MaTaia Lawson, ranked in the Top 10 of last year’s 2025 Extra Elite 100 (which is currently being updated over the next three weeks!), recently talked to Extra Inning Softball about Iowa Premier, Marist High in Illinois, playing multiple sports at a national level, tumbling and playing in the Nationals.

Honors: USA Elite Direct Select 10U; #6 in the 2025 Extra Elite 100; two-time USA Soccer Top 100 player for the Class of 2025; and named one of the top athletes for the Class of 2025 by Prep Digs Magazine VB.
Travel Ball Highlights/Fall Stats: 292 ABs, .510 AVG, .576 OBP, 1.329 OPS, .915 SLG, 54 SBs, 86 hits, 25 doubles, 21 triples, 18 HRs, 77 RBIs, 21 SO, 48 walks and 133 runs.
High School Highlights: Started on the varsity volleyball team, #1 or #2 in state all season.
How did you end up being a member of Iowa Premier?
I’ve been playing against them for several seasons and developed relationships/friendships with the players and coaches over the years. Two of my teammates on Iowa Premier have been with me since 10U, so it felt like a natural fit to call home and happy to represent such a great club!
What has the spring been like for you?
I played spring ball with my Iowa Premier team for better competition and better coaching!
Can you talk about playing volleyball and how you have done?
I’ve been with 1st Alliance VB Club since I was 7 years old playing on their 11U team. My 15 Gold Team has been ranked #1-#3 in the country the past three seasons and we have finished fifth at USA VB Nationals the past two seasons.
