1. Auburn takes down Florida behind Maddie Penta
Maddie Penta had another quality outing in the circle and the Auburn Tigers took the win in game one of their series hosting Florida. Penta went 6.1 innings in the circle, giving up five hits and one run and striking out six Gator batters. Shelby Lowe closed the game with two strikeouts to finish off the win, yet another stellar day in the circle for the Tiger bullpen.
The Tiger offense got six hits off of Florida’s Elizabeth Hightower, including a 2-run home run from Aspyn Godwin and a solo shot by Nelia Peralta that provided all the scoring that Auburn needed.
2. Megan Faraimo, UCLA stay hot
A second-inning run by Oregon started the scoring early, but from then on, it was all UCLA and Megan Faraimo. The Bruins scratched out a run in the fourth inning that tied the game, then scored again on a Savannah Pola RBI double in the fifth and got an Alyssa Garcia home run in the sixth to provide an insurance run.
Faraimo continued her weeks-long hot streak in the pitching circle, throwing a complete game and allowing four hits and a run while collecting seven strikeouts. Against a stacked Oregon offense, Faraimo shut down the Ducks throughout the game and was her most effective self in the final frame – in the seventh, she struck out Oregon’s 5-6-7 hitters in quick succession to finish off the victory.
3. An offensive outpouring for Montana
In Cedar City for a Big Sky series against Southern Utah, Montana certainly brought their bats on Friday. In the process of sweeping a doubleheader over the hosting Thunderbirds, Montana scored 37 runs in two games, including posting a 23-spot in game one of the day.
Montana got their scoring started early, posting an 8-run first inning that included three consecutive bases-loaded walks, two sacrifice flies, and three RBI singles. Four more in the second and one run in the third kept the scoring going for the Grizzlies. In the fourth inning, three more bases-loaded walks added to the Grizzlies’ scoring before their offense started clicking in its own right – a pair of RBI singles were followed by a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot by Cami Sellers. Game 1 finished with a final score of 23-7.
Game 2 was a much tighter affair, ultimately going to extra innings as an 11-11 tied ball game before Montana pulled away in the eighth inning. Montana matched their day one performance with 17 hits in game two, including just two extra-base hits. An 8-run rally in the top of the seventh for the visiting Grizzlies tightened up the ball game, and a trio of RBI singles in the top of the eighth inning gave the squad the win and finished off the sweep.
4. Ole Miss blanks Arkansas
Ole Miss carried the momentum from their series sweep over Missouri last weekend into Friday night, blanking visiting Arkansas in a 2-0 final score. The Rebels scored two on a pair of RBI singles in the second inning, and that was all the offense the team needed. Ole Miss spoiled an 8-strikeout performance by Arkansas’ Chenise Delce and three Rebels pitchers combined to shutout the Arkansas offense, limiting the Hogs to four hits in the game.
5. Kim Wert, record breaker
Missouri slugger Kim Wert set a new Tigers program record for career home runs, spanking her 48th career longball on Friday. Wert broke a tie for first place all-time and took sole possession of the record. A former Hofstra transfer, Wert has been an every day starter at Mizzou since transferring to join the Tigers as a sophomore; Friday night’s home run was her ninth of the 2022 season.
