Event Recap: OLu Defeats Villa Park at Michelle Carew Classic (April 1, 2022)

Some of the top high school teams in California and some of the surrounding states converged on Anaheim Hills, CA, this week for the Michelle Carew Classic, which is hosted by Canyon High of Anaheim.

Here’s what happened in Friday’s games:

Orange Lutheran, CA, 3, Villa Park, CA, 2: LHP Brianne Weiss, #28 in the 2024 Extra Elite 100, picked up her 11th win, OF Kai Minor, #17 in the 2025 Extra Elite 100, went 3 for 3 and 2023 SS/3B Tessa Jerue drove in two runs to help the Lancers upset the Spartans, #1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, in the Gold Bracket.

Arizona-bound P Sydney Somerndike did not play after twisting her ankle on Thursday night.

Norco, CA, 11, Centennial of Las Vegas, NV, 3: Florida-committed 2023 3B/SS/2B Alyssa Hovermale homered and drove in three runs, 2025 OF Dakota Potter went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and 2023 P Marley Goluskin allowed zero runs, two hits and struck out five for the Cougars, #16 in the state, in a Gold Bracket game.

Canyon of Anaheim, CA, 3, South Torrance, CA, 1: The Comanches scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past the Spartans in the Gold Bracket.

St. Francis of Mountain View, CA, 4, Los Alamitos, CA, 3: Washington-bound C/OF Sydney Stewart hit a three-run home run to help the Lancers, #2 in the state, rally past the #12 Griffins.

Marina of Huntington Beach, CA, 4, Saugus, CA, 2: 2023 P/CF Makayla Mathis went 3 for 4 with a run, 2022 C/1B Zoe King went 1 for 3 witha double and an RBI, 2024 OF Rylee Gonzalez went 1 for 3 and 2023 P Heather Nugent allowed four hits and one run in four innings to lead the Vikings in the Bronze Bracket.

Vista Murrieta, CA, 14, Beaumont, CA, 0: 2022 P/1B/OF Jaidyn Gamble allowed three hits in four scoreless innings and 2023 OF Sophia Romero homered to lift the Broncos in the Silver Bracket.

Beaumont, CA, 8, El Modena of Orange, CA, 0: P Cambia Salmon, #7 in the 2024 Extra Elite 100, allowed one hit and struck out 13 in five innings and Jillian Vasquez, Jayde Pagdilao and Salmon homered for the Cougars, #15 in the state, in the Silver Bracket.

Grand Terrace, CA, 5, El Modena of Orange, CA, 0: 2024 P Tatiana Gomez allowed one hit and struck out four to get the win and 2024 C/SS/OF Kayleese Beach went 2 for 3 with a double and a two-run homer

El Camino Real of Woodland Hills, CA, 6, Esperanza of Anaheim, CA, 1: 2022 P/1B Brooke DeSmet threw a three-hitter and 2022 P Courtney Cohen went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs for the Royals, the deending CIF LA City Section Open Division champion, in the Silver Bracket.
