Virginia Tech’s Pete D’Amour Wins #200: Five Fast Facts

Virginia Tech head coach Pete D’Amour recorded the 200th win of his head coaching career on Friday.

D’Amour posted the milestone victory in a 13-1 over conference foe Syracuse on Friday afternoon. As he celebrates the milestone achievement, here are Five Fast Facts about him and his career.

1. He has only been a head coach for six years.

D’Amour began his head coaching career at Kennesaw State, spending two seasons as the Owls’ head coach before taking over the Virginia Tech program prior to the 2019 season. He is in his fourth season, third full year, with the Hokies.

2. He led Virginia Tech to a historic turnaround.

In his first season leading the Hokies’ program, D’Amour led the squad to a 24-win improvement from their previous year and won 47 games. The Hokies were 20-4 in conference play that year, the most ACC wins in program history.

3. He has never won fewer than 37 games in a season.

While at Kennesaw State, D’Amour’s teams won 39 and 40 games, respectively. Since getting to Virginia Tech, he posted 47 wins in 2019 and 37 wins last season. During the abbreviated 2020 campaign, the Hokies were 21-4 overall.

4. He is a former men’s fastpitch softball player.

D’Amour played shortstop and pitched in the men’s fastpitch softball realm for seven years and was MVP of the NSA World Series in 2007. He had played college baseball at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Frostburg State.

5. He led Virginia Tech within a game of the Women’s College World Series last season.

Despite boasting their lowest win total in D’Amour’s tenure – *just* 37 games – Virginia Tech won the Tempe Regional last season and won the first game of the Los Angeles Super Regional against 2nd-seeded UCLA. The Hokies finished last year one win shy of advancing to the Women’s College World Series.
