A hot start to the 2021 season seemed like a sign that something special was in store for the Iowa State program. For a team that had not reached the NCAA tournament since the 1980s, a return to the postseason was a long time coming.

The program broke that decades-long streak of absences by reaching the NCAA tournament last year, advancing all the way to the Regional final in Columbia, Missouri. Star shortstop Sami Williams graduated after the season, but the Cyclones return some other important pieces as they now try to make back-to-back postseason trips.
