Some of the top high school teams in California and some of the surrounding states converged on Anaheim Hills, CA, this week for the Michelle Carew Classic, which is hosted by Canyon High of Anaheim Hills.
Here’s what happened:
Arizona-bound P Sydney Somerndike, #13 in the 2022 Extra Elite 100, outdueled P Cambria Salmon, #7 in the 2024 Extra Elite 100, to lead Villa Park, CA, #1 in the state in Cal-Hi Sports, to a 1-0 victory over #15 Beaumont, CA, in the Michelle Carew Classic on Thursday night at Peralta Park.
Somerndike allowed one hit, no runs and struck out 10 in 5.2 innings before leaving the game with an injury. She is doubtful for the rest of the tournament.
2025 P/UT Auddrey Lira allowed one hit and struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief for the Spartans.
2024 3B Kalia Espere went 1 for 2 with a double and a run, 2023 SS/OF Jordyn Lawhon went 2 for 2 with two doubles and an RBI and 2022 C Brianne Kang went 1 for 3 to lead Villa Park’s offense.

Canyon of Anaheim, CA, 8, Cathedral Catholic of San Diego, CA, 0: Arizona State-bound P Kylee Magee struck out 11 with one walk and went 3 for 4, 2022 2B/OF/SS/UT Bella Fraser went 3 for 4, 2024 IF Paloma Saenz went 3 for 4, and 2023 1B/P Skye Limardo went 3 for 4 for the Comanches in the victory.
South Torrance, CA, 14, Yucaipa, CA, 4: 2022 RF Alyssa Yee, 2022 SS Avery Weisbrook and 2025 2B/SS Hina Usanda all hot home runs, 2022 1B/3B/OF Jade Bayless had three RBIs and 2023 CF Paige Hayward had a home run-robbing catch to lead the Spartans. Nishi went the distance to improve to 15-2 for South Torrance.
St. Francis of Mountain View, CA, 10, Esperanza of Anaheim. CA, 0: 2022 1B Sydney Stewart fomered scored twice and drove in five runs for the Lancers.
Norco, CA, 9, Grand Terrace, CA, 1: Arizona State-committed 2023 P Mya Perez pitched 4.1 scoreless and hitless innings with four strikeouts, 2022 OF Abby Dayton went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, 2024 2B/3B/SS Maddy Aguilera went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and 2022 C/1B Delaney Whieldon drove in two runs for the Cougars.
Notre Dame of Salinas, CA, 6, Mater Dei of Chula Vista, CA, 0: 2024 P/3B Johnny Casarez pitched 5.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and 2025 P Sophia Cardinale pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief to pace the Spirits.
Cathedral Catholic of San Diego, CA, 1, Huntington Beach, CA, 0: 2024 P Candace Tarle pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts to get the win, 2-24 2B Sereniti Trice went 2 for 2 with a triple, two stolen bases and an RBI and 2025 3B Sinalei Talataina drove in the game-winning run for the Dons.
Yucaipa, CA, 12, Upland, CA, 6: 2022 C/OF Saige Alexander went 2 for 3 with two runs, two home runs and six RBIs for the Thunderbirds.
Chino Hills, CA, 4, Great Oak of Temecula, CA, 2: 2023 SS/2B Samantha Bland belted a two-run home run and 2022 P/OF Tatum Johnson got the complete game win for the Huskies.
Grand Terrace, CA, 11, Chino Hills, CA, 4: 2024 3B/SS/2B Madi Landizabal and 2023 OF/3B homered for the Huslies in the loss to the Titans.
Centennial of La Vegas, NV, 2, Notre Dame of Salinas, CA, 1: 2022 P/1B Madison Lucero allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out three to get the victory for the Bulldogs.
El Modena of Orange, CA, 7, Mater Dei of Chula Vista, CA, 5: Sam Stevenson pitched a complete game, Kaitlyn Galasso went 2 for 4, Julianna Brower went 2 for 2 with an RBI, Bella Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs, Sara Pinedo drove in two runs with a pinch-hit triple and Lynsey Arostigue went 1 for 3 with an RBI for the Vanguards.
South Torrance, CA, 3, Canyon View of Waddell, AZ, 2: 2023 P Jayden Nishi scattered six hits, gave up one earned run and struck out six and 2022 C/1B Devin Elam and 2022 2B/1B Jaden Moore had two hits apiece to lead the Spartans.
Marina of Huntington Beach, CA, 6, Cypress, CA, 2: 2022 C/1B Haylee Orozco went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, 2024 SS Annaliah Lummus went 2 for 3 with two doubles, a run and an RBI, 2025 UT Rachel Ruiz went went 2 for 4 with a doubles and an RBI and 2023 P Heather Nugent allowed one run in four innings to get the win for the Vikings in the victory.
