Rising Temperatures Mark the Second Day of the Boise Blast Summer Shootout
The Boise Blast Summer Shootout continued into its second day, showcasing the best of fastpitch softball across two locations: Discovery Park in Meridian and Willow Lane Park in Boise. With 53 teams competing on the first day, the tournament has been a whirlwind of excitement. This event has attracted teams from various Idaho cities, including Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Meridian, and Boise, as well as teams from other states such as Elko, Nevada, and Oregon.
Player Highlights and Interviews
The tournament, structured with a four-game guarantee and double elimination, saw 63 games played today under the blazing heat, with temperatures reaching a scorching 101 degrees. Jolie Hultner, one of the dedicated tournament directors, expressed her enthusiasm for the event’s success.
“Between the two fields, there were 63 games played. We enjoyed watching some close nail biter games. We also saw several girls hit the ball over the fence in the two older divisions. In the younger divisions there was also fierce competition. The competition was intense, with teams battling it out in both older and younger divisions. Spectators were treated to nail-biting finishes and impressive home runs, adding to the excitement of the day. Among the many highlights were the performances of young athletes who displayed remarkable skill and determination.”
Extra Inning Softball also had the pleasure of interviewing two players who are friends but often find themselves on opposite sides of the field. Rhylee Weilep, a player for the Crossfire team under Coach Jake Grigg, shared her excitement for the summer, stating she is most looking forward to “swimming.” Given today’s heat, her anticipation is entirely understandable.
Brooklyn Verwey, who plays for Coach Ryan Trappen, added a touch of humor to our interview when she mentioned she is looking forward to “getting tan” this summer. Her light-hearted response was a reminder of the fun and camaraderie that these tournaments foster among young athletes.
We also spoke with Nicole Rose, whose husband, Ryan Rose, coaches the Gametime (GST) 12U team alongside Jennifer Cafferty and Amber Schuermann. Nicole reflected on the growth of their new organization, stating:
“GST is a new organization and the players have already grown a lot. Next year the girls will be even better.”
A Growing Softball Community in Boise
Boise is an optimal city to host softball tournaments, offering a blend of favorable weather, excellent facilities, and a growing community of competitive teams. While today saw temperatures reaching 101 degrees, such extremes are rare, and the city typically enjoys a more moderate climate that showcases all four seasons.
Boise boasts several well-maintained fields capable of hosting large-scale events, such as Discovery Park and Willow Lane Park, making it a prime location for tournaments. The growth of softball teams in Idaho is notable, and Extra Inning Softball plans to attend other tournaments in the state this summer, highlighting the region’s rising prominence in the sport.
