College Bound Jocks Player of the Month (Committed): Macy Chamberlin… Why She Committed the Day After Her Visit to Penn State

Macy Chamberlin on her visit to Penn State in November 2022.j

Working together with College Bound Jocks, Extra Inning Softball is spotlighting CBJ Players of the Month including those who have signed or committed as well as those who are on their way!

Today for April 2023’s honoree, we feature 2024 catcher/corner infielder Macy Chamberlin who, found many things to love about Penn State and committed to the Big Ten school just one day after her visit to the school.

One reason she and her parents felt good about the school: Head Coach Clarisa Crowell asked the athlete to text her to know that she made it home safely after her on-campus tour!

Here’s more on this standout player who lives in Ohio, about a five-hour drive from where she’ll play softball at the next level…

Player: MACY CHAMBERLIN
Club Team: Turnin2 – Pezz
High School: Evergreen (Metamora, Ohio)
Grad Year: 2024
Position(s): C/CIF
Committed to: Penn State

What factors led you to commit to the Nittany Lions?
When I visited the Penn State campus I was not overwhelmed, there are more than 40,000 students at Penn State but it did not feel that way during my visit. Head Coach, Coach Crowell, and her staff were amazing. The balance between academics and athletics came across as a priority. Calling Beard Field home while at Penn State also made it very easy to say yes. My mom and dad were even bigger fans of Penn State when Coach C asked me to text her when we got home from our 5 hour drive.

When, where, and how did you commit?
On November 30th I sat on our living room couch with my parents around me and I called Coach “C” that I would like to continue my academic and athletic journey at Penn State. This was just a day after being on my visit.

What are your top individual accomplishments?
(2021 Freshman year)- Honorable Mention All-State, First Team All-District, First Team All-Conference (2022 Sophomore year)- First Team All-State, First Team All-District, First Team All-Conference, Player of the Year in conference.

What are your strengths in softball?
Some strengths defensively are my ability to play multiple positions but primarily as catcher. Some of my catching strengths include being able to work with a variety of pitchers and helping them perform their very best. Other strengths include above average overhand throwing velocity, touching 70 mph in 2021. Some strengths offensively are the ability to hit for power, as well as having a high contact rate and an understanding of the strike zone. A lot of this I attribute to my work with Tarrah Beyster. Coach Beyster has been my hitting coach for several years, without her I would not be the hitter I am today.  During my freshman year I hit 13 home runs with only striking out twice and during my Sophomore year I hit 8 home runs and recorded zero strike outs.

What is your favorite softball memory?
Winning the 16u Junior Olympic Cup in 2022 in the Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Do you have any softball superstitions?
I am not a big superstitious person but I do have a routine every time I get into the box.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen happen on a softball field?
After winning the Junior Olympic Cup Championship, one of my teammates who played the outfield realized her uniform was not dirty enough so she proceeded to pick up some Hall of Fame field dirt and rubbed it on her white uniform before pictures.

If you could meet anyone in the softball world, who would it be?
Lauren Chamberlain because we both play a little bit of first base and we both hit with some power.

What is one thing you have learned from your coach that will always stay with you?
My Turnin2 Coach, Coach Ron Pezzoni, is very much a “lead by example” person, so I think he has taught me that you do not have to be loud to be a great leader and have the respect of many people.

How would you say College Bound Jocks helped you in the recruiting process?
CBJ’s Brian Chidester helped me create a skills video in May of 2020 and again in May of 2021. The College Bound Jocks platform then provided me with the ability to share those videos with hundreds of college coaches. My family and I always felt I was well represented by Brian Chidester and his staff. I don’t think without CBJ my recruitment process would have been as successful.

What is something unique about you?
Growing up in a small town, not many people hold the same aspirations like wanting to play Power 5 softball, so something unique about me is I have been working independently trying to reach my dreams, but I am very excited to get to Penn State and be around people with the same aspirations as me.

Who is your hero and why?
It is very difficult to just pick one because I have so many amazing people in my life, but if I had to pick one it would have to be my Mom. She has taught me so many aspects of life including: how to work through the ups and downs of life and how to not let the highs get too high or allow the lows to get too low. My Mom really is the most selfless person I have ever met and truly wants the best for everyone

What other activities/hobbies do you enjoy outside of softball?
Activities and hobbies that I really enjoy are basketball season, swimming in the pool during the summer, playing cards and sitting around a bonfire with my friends, working out, and being able to spend time with my family especially when my brother comes home from college.

What is your favorite quote or motto?
My motto or approach to life is to always be humble and kind to others.
