Event Recap: Magee Leads Canyon To Michelle Carew Classic Title (April 2, 2022)

Some of the top high school teams in California and some of the surrounding states converged on Anaheim Hills, CA, this week for the Michelle Carew Classic, which is hosted by Canyon High of Anaheim.

Here’s what happened on the final day of the tournament on Saturday:

Canyon of Anaheim, CA, has been relying on Arizona State-bound P Kylee Magee, #3 in the 2022 Extra Elite 100, for the whole Michelle Carew Classic and the senior right-hander didn’t disappoint in the finals against Orange Lutheran, CA, on Saturday night at Peralta Park, CA.

Magee struck out 17 to get the complete-game victory as host Canyon beat the Lancers, 2-1, to win the Michelle Carew Classic for the first time since 1991.

“I’m so proud of our team for fighting until the end,” Magee said. “Most of our games the teams scored early, but we didn’t let up and my offense and my defense had my back. I knew after my team got me some runs I had to shut it down because they worked hard for me. (2023, 1B/P) Skye Limardo came in clutch and I’m so proud of her! It was a really cool win for our school.”

2024 IF Paloma Saenz drove in two runs with a bases-loaded sacrifice bunt in the top of the sixth to give the Comanches the lead.

2024 1B Emi Todoroki drove in 2025 CF Kai Minor with an RBI single in the top of the second to give the Lancers an early 1-0 lead.

St. Francis of Mountain View, CA, 11, Norco, CA, 6: Florida-committed 2023 3B/SS/2B Alyssa Hovermale went 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBIs for the Cougars in the loss in the Gold Bracket 3rd-place game.

“It was a great team win, but we are focused on the next game against Canyon,” Minor said. “Everyone contributed and that’s what needs to happen to compete against these great teams. Going forward we just want to focus on the next game. One pitch at a time. One game at a time.”
