Extra Elite Spotlight: 10 Questions with Hannah Dorsett… the Third Softball Standout Player In the Family!

Hannah Dorsett is the third player in the family to compete for the Birmingham Thunderbolts program.

Hannah Dorsett comes from a softball-crazy family: her father, Keith, coached the 16U Birmingham Thunderbolts last year to the PGF Premier Nationals title and she is the youngest of three girls who’ve played for the Bolts organization.

Maddie Dorsett, a junior infielder at Samford.

Known that it’s not always easy being a Dorsett in the Thunderbolts organization.

Hannah has the constant pressure of being compared to both of her older sisters—Maddie (currently a junior infielder at Samford) and Abigail (a 2020 outfielder who won the title with their father’s Thunderbolts team last summer)—who have been through the organization and had great success.

Abigail Dorsett, a 2020 outfielder who won a title with the Bolts 16U team last summer.

Somehow Hannah doesn’t feel the pressure and she continues to impress.   Her coach, Ted Flannery, says, “Hannah might end up being the best Dorsett of all of them.  She is known for her phenomenal glove and exceptional footwork, as she has been a stellar defender for the Bolts 04 middle infield for years.”

Coach Flannery also raves about the young player’s field intelligence and ability to stay cool under pressure.

“Hannah never seems to get flustered and remains calm, cool and collected no matter the situation,” the coach adds.

Coach Keith Dorsett after the PGF title game.

Offensively, Hannah is a slapper who can place the ball anywhere in the infield she wants.  She led her school ball team in batting average last year hitting .635 for the season in the 2-hole.  She hit 2nd in the lineup often for the Bolts this past season and held the second-best average (.425) on a team filled with SEC commits.

Hannah continues to receive interest from schools across the Southeast and will be one to watch when the Bolts take the field this summer.

And as Abigail got to win a title with her father in the dugout in 2018, the Dorsett family has to hope lighting strikes twice as the father of the three standout siblings will be coaching with Flannery on the Bolts 05 staff in 2019.

Here’s more on the eighth grader who’s following in some pretty impressive softball-playing footsteps…

Hannah is known for her field intelligence and ability to stay calm under pressure.

What is your favorite things about being a Birmingham Thunderbolt?
My favorite thing about being a Birmingham Thunderbolt is how it makes me feel so at home. The whole organization is very well put together and everyone apart of it feels like family.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?
This summer I’m really looking forward to traveling to Colorado and California with my teammates while playing the game we love.

How much pressure do you feel to follow the steps of your sisters considering the success they have had being Bolts?
I wouldn’t call it pressure it just pushes me to work harder every day. They have set the standards high.

How do you feel about your father coaching you now that he has won a PGF Championship with another Thunderbolts team?
I’m excited to have him as my coach he has high expectations for our team and he has the same mindset as me and my teammates, to win it all.

Where have you camped and what schools really made an impression on you?
I have camped at South Alabama, Mississippi State, Alabama-Birmingham and Auburn. I really like all of those schools and many more, but I really like Auburn.

Could Hannah be the best of the standout trio of softball-playing sisters?

Were you disappointed or happy with the changes in the recruiting rules?
The changes in the recruiting rules don’t disappoint me in any way because I feel like it now takes so much stress off of young softball players, including myself.

What would you say is a key to the success you have had over the years playing softball?
The key to success is to become best friends with your teammates, that is what makes the game so much fun and it makes it a lot easier to win.

What is the area of your game you are working hardest to improve?
I’m really working on trying to improve my strength because that can help me in all aspects of softball.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve experienced traveling across the country for softball?
The most interesting thing I have experienced would be getting to make posters for the PGF Championship Game 2018 and getting to experience it live.
