Both have recently committed to collegiate softball programs, with Evans set to play for Hampton University and Simon joining UC Riverside. Their stories of determination, resilience, and passion for the game are an inspiration to the softball community.
Sydney Evans: Thriving at Hampton University
Sydney Evans, a 2025 graduate from Unity BK2, has committed to Hampton University, a prestigious institution in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Evans, who plays 3rd base, shortstop, and outfield, is bringing her dynamic energy and leadership skills to this historic program. She plans to major in biology, pursuing a career in the sciences while excelling on the field.
For Evans, choosing Hampton University was a deeply personal decision.
“During my visit, I felt an immediate connection to the culture and environment,” she shared.
The vibrant community and the university’s history as an HBCU played a significant role in her decision.
Evans was also impressed by the leadership of Coach Tarvin. “Building a relationship with Coach Tarvin throughout the recruiting process solidified my choice,” Evans said.
She admired the coach’s ability to develop players while fostering a supportive, close-knit team atmosphere.
Evans’ softball journey began at the age of 8, inspired by her mom’s encouragement. By age 10, she joined her first travel team, igniting her passion for the game.
“By 12u, I realized I wanted to play collegiate softball,” Evans recalled.
Her determination and work ethic propelled her through challenges, shaping her into the athlete she is today.
Along the way, Evans became a role model for her younger sisters and other athletes in her community. She emphasized the importance of balancing academics, athletics, and personal growth. Her commitment to excellence culminated in her November 8, 2024, commitment to Hampton.
Evans is eager to bring her high-energy style of play to Hampton’s program, where she’ll wear jersey number 5.
“I’m excited to grow, thrive, and contribute to the team’s success,” she said.
Evans’ dedication to the game and her community makes her a standout, both on and off the field.
Julia Simon: Poised for Success at UC Riverside
Julia Simon, a 2026 graduate and standout utility player for Universal Bay Area Tatro 18U Gold, has committed to UC Riverside in the Big West Conference. Simon’s versatility, positivity, and leadership make her an exceptional addition to the Highlanders’ program. She plans to study pre-law, aiming for a future in law while continuing her softball journey.
Simon’s decision to join UC Riverside was driven by the unique opportunities the university offers.
“I have the incredible chance to pursue a top-tier UC education while competing in Division I softball,” Simon shared.
She felt an instant connection to the program and Coach Matta’s vision for the team.
The campus itself also made a strong impression on Simon.
“The environment felt like home,” she said.
The combination of academic excellence and athletic support made UC Riverside the perfect fit for her goals.
Simon’s achievements on the field are remarkable. She’s a two-time All-West Catholic Athletic League First Team honoree and has earned recognition on the Mercury News’ All-Bay Area Second Team and San Francisco Chronicle’s All-Metro Softball Team. Her performance during her freshman and sophomore varsity seasons placed her in the top five of the league for batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
Simon’s selection for the 2023 Alliance Fastpitch Top 60 Stars of Tomorrow and her participation in the USA Softball HPP National Selection Event further highlight her potential as an elite athlete.
Simon’s commitment to UC Riverside marks the next step in a journey defined by resilience and growth.
“I’m excited to bring my skills, positivity, and leadership to the Highlanders,” Simon said.
She’ll be wearing jersey number 22 as she continues to make an impact both on and off the field.
