Marissa Young Wins #200: Five Fast Facts

Duke head coach Marissa Young earned her 200th career win in a 3-0 triumph over Boston College on Saturday.

Here are Five Fast Facts about the Blue Devils’ skipper.

1. She started the Duke program.

Young is the only head coach that the Duke program has ever known, hired to start the Blue Devils’ program in 2015. She has led the program in every game in which they’ve competed since the program’s beginning.

2. She previously coached on the other side of Tobacco Road.

Though the Duke vs. North Carolina rivalry is one of college sports’ most heralded, Young has worn both the colors of both programs. Prior to being hired at Duke, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at North Carolina.

3. Duke was not her first head coaching role.

Prior to beginning her career as a Division 1 coach, Young spent three seasons as the head coach at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She built the program from a 2-win team to a 20+-win team by the time she departed.

4. She is one of the best players in Michigan program history.

A three-time All-American selection during her playing career, Young was named the Big 10 Pitcher of the Year in 2002 and followed that award with the Big 10 Player of the Year trophy one year later in 2003.

5. During her playing career, she was a two-way standout.

During her time in a Wolverine uniform, Young was a factor on both sides of the ball for her team. She finished her playing career as the program’s career strikeout leader from the pitching circle and also was second in program history with 88 career wins. In 2003, she matched the program’s single-season home run record with 13 longballs to her credit.
