A slow and steady approach to the recruiting process earned Troy University a commitment from one of Kentucky’s top prep players.
Montgomery County High School standout Reaghan Oney decommitted from Marshall University in the fall of 2023 after a coaching change occurred within the program. Oney only needed a little time to reflect on her next decision before calling Troy head coach Eric Newell, who scouted her at several tournaments, about her desire to be a Trojan.
“I decommitted and sat around all night wondering what happens next,” said Oney. “Then I called Eric Newell and said, ‘I want to commit to you.’”
What Troy gets is a power hitting catcher/outfielder with lofty goals for herself and her team early into her final season of high school softball.
“I would love to win Miss Kentucky Softball,” she said. “And I want to go to state – that’s a team goal. Individually, though, I want to get Miss Kentucky Softball. And there are a few state records I want to beat.”
