What an amazing recruiting week it was for Nate Nelson’s Hotshots Premier 16U team out of Texas!
Eight 2022 standouts on the national championship-winning squad (three of them this summer) are now committed after the Contact Period opened up on Tuesday, September 1 and college coaches could reach out to his stellar roster of players.
Recently committed are P/1B Madison Applebe (Ole Miss); C Reese Atwood (Texas); UT Madelyn Lopez (Syracuse); CIF/OF Madison “Dee” McClarity (Texas Tech); P/1B Chloe Riassetto (Louisiana); MIF/OF Cecelia Vasquez (Louisiana), C/IF Ellington Whitaker (Baylor) and our spotlight athlete today, OF Nyjah Fontenot who is headed to Arkansas.
Nyjah was ranked in the Extra Inning Softball 2022 Extra Elite 100 published in April and we had this to say about her in her profile:
“Nyjah combines great speed with what one coach calls ‘tons of power’ from the leadoff spot and can wreck a defense with her small ball game as well using her 2.6 home-to-first speed. Her Hotshots coach, Nate Nelson says of her defense: “Nothing falls in front of this kid, she’s one of the best tracking outfielders I have coached or watched play.”
Here’s our Q&A this weekend with the speedster who has continued her growth as one of the top outfielders in the country despite once being cut from a team when she was eight-years-old!

Walk us through the Sept. 1 start of the Contact Period… how did it go for you (how many coaches reached out to you by call, text, etc.)?
I started receiving text messages at midnight requesting time to schedule phone calls. The schools that contacted me were LSU, Arkansas, Purdue, Stanford, University of Lafayette Louisiana, Pittsburgh, Texas Tech, Ole Miss and NC State.
What led you to commit when you did?
I was offered scholarships by several schools. I prayed long and hard about my decision and, after hearing the offer from Arkansas, it just felt right!
