It’s almost game-time for the 4 The Heroes All-Star Game and you’ll want to watch this game for the softball, certainly, but there’s much more to it than the competition.

For one thing, it’s about the uniform.

The 4 The Heroes Foundation honors those in the military and those who are first responders (police, firemen, EMT’s). Sometimes they make the ultimate sacrifice in their efforts to protect and serve others.

One poignant moment will happen after the bottom of the 4th inning when there will be an onfield presentation to the family of fallen San Antonio Police Department Officer Rocky Riojas.

That is the essence of this game: great competition, yes, but playing for a bigger cause.

The players get it… we asked them what factored into their wanting to play in the 4 The Heroes All-Star Game… here are some of their responses…

Why are playing in the 4 The Heroes All-Star Game?

I saw it as a great opportunity and honor to play for our fallen soldiers, first responders and others.
Kailey Brown

Tate Smith of Sequin H.S. will play for the North Team.

* There were no factors that went into my decision to play in the 4 the Hero’s game, it is a complete honor to be playing for this organization and be able to be a representative for such a powerful message.
Tate Smith

* It is honoring those who have served. I believe people do not understand how special and important this kind of event is.
Jaden Castro

* It was a no-brainer— I was honored to be given the offer and immediately knew it was something I wanted to be a part of.
Annie Wallace

* I had just started to think about my Uncle (a veteran) and how he would want me to honor him by playing this game.
Bella Sanchez

*  Choosing whether or not to play in the All-Star game was not hard at all. I knew as soon as I was presented the jersey that this would be the perfect way to end my career. It was such an honor to be considered, and much more, chosen for this game… how could I say no?
Catherin Pisano

* It was an easy decision. This a great organization and they are giving back. Then, the icing on the cake was to see all the great players who were selected and knowing I would have the opportunity to play with them.
Gabriela (Gabby) Rodriguez

Emily Boettcher of Fredericksburg High will pitch for the North Team.

As soon as I knew that I was chosen to participate in the 4 The Heroes All-Star Game, I knew that I wanted to play. I love what the 4 The Heroes Foundation does and am honored to be able to support it.
Emily Boettcher

I already knew what 4 The Heroes stood for, so being able to play in a game with people I played against in high school and getting to play against really good competition was all I needed to decide i was going to play. –
Bri Moore

It was an amazing opportunity that I was happily able to accept!
— Lauren Garcia

It was a no-brainer for me. It was an honor and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
—  Cierra Gutierrez

*****

The 4 The Heroes Foundation which was formed in 2013 to honor military, first responders and their families with the main purpose “to make sure that those heroes are never forgotten,” according to John Bacon, the Chairman of the Board for the organization.

Bacon explains the all-star game has multiple purposes.

“We at 4 The Heroes foundation are excited to embark on this opportunity to help promote not only the female high school athlete but to also promote the sport of softball.”
