SOFTBALL PETS

After watching PA Stingrays 07 2025 C/3B June McCune‘s amazing dog compete in the Quarantine TP High Jump Challenge, TLI knew we had to highlight the top Softball Pets in the nation.

TLI has always been a big-time lover of dogs. I got Buster, the one-eyed Jack Russell Terrier, from the San Clemente shelter. For years, Buster traveled to every softball field, gym, football field all over California and even to Las Vegas for all the big boxing and UFC events.

BTW, Buster got bit on the face by a Rottweiler and that’s how he lost his eye, but that never stopped him. He loved playing catch at all the dog parks and beaches in So Cal. He loved baby pools, jumping them and splashing around.

When he finally passed away a few years ago, I was heartbroken.

Here’s a video of Buster washing his ball at Central Bark in Irvine, CA.

It took me a year before I was ready to get another dog. I went to the Fresno animal shelter with my mom and my sisters sons, the Toy twins. That’s right, I’m a Godfather. I didn’t know what kind of dog I was going to get, but I fell in love with this tiny Terrier mix. I was told she was found on the side of the rode in a box with three of her siblings. I don’t know what became of them, but I claimed her and named her La La. Why La La? That’s the name of Rosario Dawson‘s character in “He Got Game.” I love Rosario Dawson. Her great quote from that movie was “What about La La?”

Anyways, La La could fit in the palm of my hand. That’s how small she was and she never made a peep of barked. We took her straight to Pet Smart to by food and a collar. As we arrived at the parking lot, she peed all over me. I didn’t care. What ever La La wants, she gets.

A few weeks later, I was driving to the grocery store and walking in the middle of the street like McGoo was a little black dog with no collar or tags. He was built like a wiener dog, but bigger. He wasn’t running fast, but he would trot a few feet ahead of me every time I got close. I finally caught up to him. This was the bad part of town in Fresno. I took him home with me and put out the word of the missing dog I was calling Buddy. No one claimed him.

I had La La, but I couldn’t keep a second dog even though he was totally awesome. I put the word out on Twitter (my old @SoCalSidelines account) and I had a number of softball coaches that were interested. But my sister decided she would take him. The Toy family decided to name him Dude.

We got La La and Dude together at the do park and La La chased him around the park and then it happened … she barked for the first time. Her first words … and she hasn’t stopped. La La is a 20-pound dynamo now and she runs the entire apartment complex. She is all over every dog, cat, squirrel, bird, varmit … you get the picture. She’s still best pals with Dude, but we haven’t seen Dude or the Toy family since the lockdown.

I can’t wait to see La and Dude playing together soon.
