The first Top 25 rankings of the season have dropped! Extra Inning Softball‘s Top 25 voting group includes working media members who regularly cover softball, as well as a group of coaches and SIDs.
Oklahoma has a stranglehold on the top spot in the rankings, with the Sooners earning every first-place vote. The Sooners are 5-0 after opening weekend, including a dominant 4-1 win over now-#6 UCLA and an offensive showing that saw the Sooners outscore opponents 40-1.
Alabama and Florida come in at #2 and #3 in the rankings after both teams posted undefeated showings with wins over fellow ranked opponents. In Tucson, Arizona, Alabama blanked the hosting Arizona Wildcats in an 11-0 final score, while Florida also blanked Michigan by a 4-0 score down in Tampa.
The SEC boasts seven teams in the rankings; in addition to Alabama and Florida, other ranked SEC teams include #12 Kentucky; #13 Tennessee; #17 Arkansas; #20 Georgia; and #24 LSU.
Five ACC teams earn a spot in the inaugural Top 25 of the year, while both the Big Ten and the PAC-12 have four ranked teams. The Big 12 sees three teams ranked, while #19 UCF and the #21 Ragin’ Cajuns are the sole teams representing the American and the Sun Belt, respectively.
22nd-ranked Illinois enters the rankings on the strength of a 4-1 showing on opening weekend that included an extra-inning win over LSU in Baton Rouge. #25 Notre Dame was 5-0 this weekend, including a run-rule victory over Charlotte in a true road game.
