A Commitment to Evolving Excellence
At Extra Inning Softball, our responsibility is not just to recognize talent—but to do so with integrity, clarity, and long-term vision. As the fastpitch softball landscape continues to evolve, so must the tools we use to evaluate and communicate athlete performance at the national level. That commitment to excellence is why, beginning with the Class of 2029, we are introducing a five-star rating system to accompany our established numerical rankings. This is an exciting addition to our commitment toward the new future of athlete assessment.
Numerical Rankings Remain
To be absolutely clear: numerical rankings are not going away. They will continue to be published, maintained, and defended with the same precision and rigor that has defined Extra Inning Softball since its inception. Rankings matter. Specificity matters. Our data-driven approach—built on verified performance, competition level, positional evaluation, and longitudinal tracking—remains the foundation of everything we do.
Moreover, this system represents a new approach to athlete assessment that aligns with our vision of precision and fairness.
We believe that this new system will greatly enhance how athletes are recognized and evaluated. Join Extra Inning Softball HERE!

Why Context Matters
What the five-star system adds is context.
Over the years, one of the most consistent challenges I have observed is how families, athletes, and even coaches can become overly fixated on small numerical movement. A shift of a few spots—often influenced by timing, additional data, or expanded evaluation pools—can feel far more significant than it truly is. In reality, those athletes may still sit within the same competitive tier nationally.

Telling the Bigger Story
The five-star system helps tell the bigger story.
Stars allow us to group athletes into broader tiers that reflect competitive level, projection, and overall national impact. Rather than diminishing the value of rankings, this structure enhances them by providing perspective. It answers an important question that raw numbers alone cannot always convey: Where does this athlete fit within the national landscape right now?
From a family and athlete standpoint, this is a healthier and more accurate way to understand evaluation. It shifts the focus from chasing a number to understanding development, readiness, and trajectory. In my opinion, that shift is not only beneficial—it is necessary for the long-term growth of the sport.

Value for College Coaches
For college coaches, the value is immediate and practical.
Recruiting timelines are accelerating, evaluation windows are tighter, and information overload is real. The five-star system provides an efficient snapshot that allows coaches to quickly identify tiers of athletes aligned with their program needs, while still having access to the full depth of our numerical rankings and supporting data. It is not a shortcut; it is a filter—one that respects the complexity of the recruiting process.
A Dynamic, Evolving Tool
Importantly, this system does not create artificial ceilings or labels. Stars are not promises, guarantees, or final judgments. They are evaluative tools—dynamic, responsive, and rooted in current information. As athletes grow, develop, and compete at higher levels, their evaluation can and will evolve accordingly.

Leading With Transparency
This enhancement is also aligned with our broader mission at Extra Inning Softball: to lead with transparency, fairness, and education. Rankings should inform—not intimidate. Recognition should motivate—not overwhelm. By pairing numerical precision with tier-based clarity, we believe we are offering the softball community a more complete, responsible, and usable evaluation framework.
Raising the Standard Forward
In my view, this added clarity is long overdue.
The five-star system does not replace what makes Extra Inning Softball trusted nationally—it strengthens it. It reflects our willingness to adapt thoughtfully, listen to the community, and continue setting the standard for how athletes are evaluated and recognized across the country.
As we look ahead, our commitment remains the same: do the work, protect the process, and serve the game with excellence.
