6 Inspiring Softball Coaches Weigh in on the Transformative Power of Gratitude
As Thanksgiving rolls around, gratitude takes center stage in many homes across the country. But beyond the holiday cheer, gratitude offers something more profound: a transformative mindset that has lasting effects on mental health, relationships, and even athletic performance.
This year, 6 inspiring softball coaches and leaders from across the nation shared their thoughts on why cultivating an “attitude of gratitude” is not just a virtue but a game-changer in sports and life. First, let’s explore what an attitude of gratitude is and the benefits of having a grateful heart.
What is an Attitude of Gratitude?
An “attitude of gratitude” involves intentionally focusing on and appreciating life’s positives, even during challenging times. It’s more than just saying “thank you”; it’s an ongoing mindset that acknowledges the good around us and the efforts of others. This perspective turns everyday moments into opportunities for joy and connection, whether it’s celebrating a teammate’s success or finding lessons in a tough game.
Research from the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley defines gratitude as recognizing the good in our lives and acknowledging that its source lies outside ourselves.
Habit of Gratitude
Like any skill, gratitude strengthens with practice. Small, consistent acts—such as writing down three things you’re thankful for each day—can create a positive shift over time. Dr. Robert Emmons, a leading researcher on gratitude, has found that keeping a gratitude journal improves emotional well-being and resilience. His studies reveal that those who regularly reflect on their blessings report greater happiness and lower stress.
Coping Response
During setbacks, reflecting on support systems and opportunities for growth can foster resilience. Research published in The Journal of Positive Psychology supports this, showing that gratitude enhances emotional recovery and helps individuals adapt to stress.
Gratitude Improves Perspective and Well-Being
Studies show it reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, increases optimism, and boosts life satisfaction. Research indicates that gratitude interventions can lead to significant improvements in psychological health, including increased happiness and reduced depressive symptoms. Now, let’s here from some of the most outstanding head coaches and organizational leaders in the softball community and why they belive an ‘attitude of gratitude’ is so important.
Ken Carlyle: Next Top Recruits
I think athletes, (including my younger self), don’t understand the importance of a good coach. I think we take for granted the time and commitment level it takes to be a coach at any level. Now that I’m older, I see how time consuming it is. I lose sleep over other people’s kids and I think that goes unnoticed.
We are so caught up in just what’s good for my daughter/son that we tend to overlook what all of these volunteer coaches go through on a daily basis just to keep the team going. It’s a full time job, so the next time you see your coach tell him/her how much you appreciate them. It goes a long way to keeping the good coaches around.
Bill Conroy: Beverly Bandits
In the ever-changing world that we live in which includes college athletics, specifically college softball, it’s easy for players and their families to care only about their own situation. The truth is appreciating your team and your teammates’ success should be a huge cause for celebration. Those who can be genuinely happy for others will ultimately succeed on and off the field, with many others celebrating life’s successes. Your gratitude and attitude for others will be a true measuring stick of a player’s character.
Brittany Lewis – TN Mojo
When we realize that every gift we have been given is from the Lord, and that we are undeserving of it all, we can’t help but to be grateful. The ability to coach and grow the game of softball is something I am extremely thankful for.
I work very hard to instill the attitude of gratitude into my athletes. I want for them to have an “I get to” attitude instead of an “I have to” attitude when it comes to our sport. This Thanksgiving, I am extremely grateful for my family, my Mojo family, my Hebron Softball family, and my coaching staff.
Bam Donalson – Santa Fe Inferno 09
Donalson emphasized that having an attitude of gratitude can be seen in your body language and your approach. He teaches that with a negative approach, lack of gratitude, and poor body language, players are unlikely to have a lot of success, if any. Negatively impacts not only the player, but the entire time and culture.
I tell my players all the time: “you are blessed ladies with God-given talent. Not everyone can play this game, especially at a high level! Ladies, be thankful and gracious that you are fortunate enough to play, travel, and compete all over the country.”
Donalson teaches his players that the lessons we learn in the game of sports will help us in life too, whether it’s a starting position on the field or a promotion at work. In his words,
“Just be grateful for the opportunity to play and express gratitude! Enjoy the ride, the tough moments, the successes, the failures and most importantly, the journey – YOUR journey! Attitude reflects the mental game and how we set long-term goals. It is a major contributor to overall performance.”
Stacy Tamborra – Athletics Gold
Gratitude is a choice. There are so many things in life that can sway our emotions such as the loss of a loved one, illness, injuries, setbacks, and all sorts of circumstances we simply cannot control. The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 to:
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
The key phrase is in ALL circumstances! Gratitude is the “act of choosing to be THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL. In the softball world we live in, we must choose gratitude and a thankful heart over the highs or lows, wins or losses that competing at the highest level in this sport brings.
KC Jackson – Impact Gold
Coach KC Jackson shared with Extra Inning Softball his views on having an ‘attitude of gratitude’ and what he is thankful for as well.
It’s a beautiful privilege to be an athlete or coach. We all have been blessed to play and coach sports. We are grateful for lifelong friendships that have been created, the scholarships and even careers from most players.
As we conclude, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the many blessings in my life. I am the oldest of seven children and am so thankful for my amazing parents, who instilled in me a love for God and the value of hard work. I am also blessed to have four incredible kids whom I adore and a wonderful son-in-law who has become a cherished part of our family.
I am deeply grateful for the amazing team I work with at Extra Inning Softball, whose passion and dedication inspire me every day. I also want to thank the softball community for its unwavering support and for being such a vital part of my journey.
As we kick off the Christmas season, let us all remember to carry the spirit of gratitude with us. Amid the hustle and bustle of life, let’s continue to show appreciation and kindness to one another, making this season even more meaningful.
