Breaking News: Aubree Munro – One of the Greatest Softball Catchers of All-Time – Announces Her Playing Retirement

Publisher’s note: I’ve been privileged to have followed Aubree going back to her days playing travel ball with the So Cal Athletics teams coached by Bruce Richardson and her prep career at Brea Olinda (California) High.

Not too many players in softball history can say they’ve won club and college national championships—three with the A’s at PGF (2010-12) at the travel ball level, two with the Florida Gators (2014 & 2015)—as well as an Olympic medal (silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games).

And a stat that I will always remember about her: the standout catcher only made one error her last two years of college ball playing with the Gators!

From my personal interactions with Aubree, she’s always shown a smart mind, a down-to-earth personality and a great sense of humor. While it will be sad to not see her in catching gear anymore, I’m sure she has a lot still to offer the sport and she will do a lot of great things for the better at whatever level she works in.

The following release was issued earlier today by USA Softball…the Tweet is from Aubree’s personal account.

Former USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT) member and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, Aubree Munro (Brea, Calif.) has announced her retirement following a remarkable career representing the Red, White and Blue.

“To anyone that has supported me over the years – Thank you,” said Munro. “I’ve played this game for me, because I loved it. But man, y’all made it so so fun. I became a player that loved the buzz, energy and atmosphere of a great crowd. I did my best to steward my job as a role model well, and I will continue to do so. Thank you for allowing me the chance to encourage and inspire you all. I’ve never taken it lightly.”

Munro has been a member of the WNT since 2016, helping the U.S. to two Pan American Games gold medals (2017, 2019), two World Championship gold medals (2016, 2018) and two World Cup silver medals (2016, 2017) prior to her most recent accomplishment of becoming an Olympic silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Known for her feared presence behind the plate, Munro caught a total of 661.7 innings throughout her six-year career with Team USA while allowing a low of 20 stolen bases.

The former Florida Gator also contributed offensively for the U.S., compiling a .251 batting average while leading the Red, White and Blue to a World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Championship title in 2018 with three home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored.

“Truly the journey of a lifetime with not a single regret, and just loaded with joy,” added Munro. “Thank you Lord for letting me live out so many of my loves. There is still a race to be ran, and I’m not slowing down.”

In addition to her impact as an athlete, Munro also extends her involvement as an athlete representative on the USA Softball Board of Directors while serving as the Chair of the USA Softball Athlete Advisory Committee where she brings exceptional experience in the youth, collegiate, professional and international levels of softball.

Chris Sebren

A true ambassador for the sport, Munro garners an eager passion for being a part of the change and progress within USA Softball as efforts continue being made for the development of the sport across all levels.

“We are so grateful for Aubree’s involvement and dedication to the sport of softball while competing on our Women’s National Team,” said USA Softball Chief of Sport Development/Performance Officer, Chris Sebren.

“Her leadership and work ethic on and off the field did not go unnoticed and truly played an integral part in our program’s success throughout the last few years. We are fortunate to have Aubree’s expertise as a part of our Board of Directors and are thrilled for her continued support and involvement in that role for years to come.”
