The University of Mobile athletic department announced via social media on Sunday that junior outfielder Amberly Montgomery has died from injuries suffered in a car accident.
According to the UM online softball roster, Montgomery was from Satsuma, Alabama and last year was one of 17 on the Rams team to make the Southern States Athletic Conference (NAIA) 2020 Softball All-Academic Team.
As a sophomore in 2020, she played in nine of the team’s 18 games, starting two and hitting .333 with a .385 on-base percentage.
In 2015, Montgomery helped lead Baker (Alabama) High to the State Championship with three hits and two RBIs in the 7A state championship as the Honeybees topped Sparkman 12-1 to go 47-6-1 for the season.
Two years later, the centerfielder was selected as the Mobile County Player of the Week three times and was chosen to play in the North/South Softball All-Star Game.
In 2019, the athlete was part of the Mobile Rams’ team that won 52 games, the third most in program history and took the Southern States Athletic Conference regular and tournament titles.
In 2020 the team went 14-4 before COVID stopped the season.
We are heartbroken. Amberly was loved by so many and was an integral part of the University of Mobile Softball program for the past three seasons.
We join the team in mourning and send Amberly’s family and loved ones our deepest prayers and love during this heartbreaking time. pic.twitter.com/jZ22owcSeZ
