Club Team Spotlight: Fury Premier 2023… a Closer Look at this Fast-Rising 16U Team

The Fury Premier 2023 team is one to watch this year and will be playing at major events like Atlanta Legacy, ProSwings and PGF Nationals in the next month or so before playing up at 18U this Fall also to prepare for the Summer of 2022.

One of the best parts of the summer in club ball is getting to see teams rise and elevate their play in big settings. Take, for example, the Fury Premier 2023 team whose Head Coach is Heather Cole with Jim Shoulders and Chris Coburn serving as assistants.

The 16U hit the season with a running start, going 4-1-1 in Scenic City, and now will face an imposing gauntlet of the Power Pools at Atlanta Legacy this weekend followed by the talent strong ProSwings Power 50.

“This is all in preparation for our 2021-2022 season,” explains Coach Cole, “as we will also take on PGF Nationals, Colorado IDT, D9, and many more. Our Fall will consist of us playing up in 18U to prepare us for the battle, next Summer (2022).”

Mikaela “Pnut” Coburn is a true triple threat lefty who tied for the team lead in RBIs hitting leadoff.

The young 2005 crew consists of five 2023’s and seven 2024’s and, last year, the Fury finished the Summer with a 35-11-3 record, finishing in the Elite 8 in every tournament but one.

Explains the head coach: “We took the Elite 50 as Champions, finished as runnesr- up in Eastern Elite to a strong Mojo 05 team, went 5-1-1 at Atlanta Legacy, finished 5th in the TCS Southern Nationals and made the Elite 8 in ASA 14A Nationals in Virginia.

Out of the 12 athletes from 2020, Cole and her staff brought back 10 of the Summer core group and secured a solid foundation for moving into the 2020-2021 season.

But it hasn’t been all easy sailing per the head coach.

“Our Fall season was plagued by COVID complications, injuries and the return from injuries which forced us to piece together a competing team.”

Now, however, the pieces the Fury Premier staff wants are in place and it should be a fun ride heading into the new school year with college coaches across the nation—including ones in conferences like the ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Sun Belt, Ohio Valley, Conference USA and several others—following the team.
