College of Western Idaho Takes First Step Toward Athletics — Could Softball Be Next for Southwest Idaho?

The College of Western Idaho (CWI) has officially applied for membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), marking the college’s first formal move toward building an intercollegiate athletics program. It’s a milestone years in the making, driven by a college that has grown rapidly and is now looking to match that growth with new opportunities for its students.

For families across the Treasure Valley who’ve watched their daughters compete in travel softball for years — often wondering whether a local college pathway would ever exist — this is a name worth remembering.

A New Door for Idaho Athletes

CWI has grown into one of the largest community colleges in the region, serving more than 36,000 students — 98.6% of them from Idaho. Until now, that growth hasn’t included varsity athletics. That’s changing. Pending approval, CWI would join the Scenic West Athletic Conference as part of NJCAA Region 18, a footprint that includes eight colleges across Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

For Idaho softball players who’ve dreamed of playing close to home, a new junior college option matters. It’s an affordable, local pathway into college athletics — the kind of opportunity that can keep talented local players from having to leave the state just to keep playing.

“Submitting this application reflects the momentum that has been building since CWI announced plans to establish athletics,” said CWI Director of Athletics Mahmood Sheikh. “We are creating a pathway for Southwest Idaho student-athletes to pursue their academic goals close to home while competing and showcasing their talents at the collegiate level.”

Built to Last, Not Rushed

The College of Western Idaho is taking a deliberate approach here — no team will begin competing until it’s fully funded, with every sport backed by its own endowment. It’s a sustainability-first model, which means CWI is playing the long game rather than rushing to field teams.

An NJCAA campus visit is scheduled for next month, with a decision from the NJCAA Board of Regents expected in Spring 2027. In the meantime, the College of Western Idaho plans to roll out intramural and recreational sports during the 2026-2027 academic year — a first step toward the culture the college hopes varsity athletics will eventually build.

“As CWI continues to grow, we’re focused on building an athletics program that strengthens school spirit and opportunity for our students and community,” said CWI President Gordon Jones.

What This Could Mean for Softball

The College of Western Idaho hasn’t announced which sports it will field first, and softball isn’t guaranteed to be among the initial offerings. But for a state with a deep and growing travel softball pipeline, a new in-state junior college program — even a hypothetical one — is exactly the kind of development recruits, families, and coaches should keep on their radar. If softball is added, it would give Idaho’s high-level travel players a rare local option to continue their careers without leaving the region.
