College Spotlight: Today is Mean Green Move-In Day at North Texas for Best Friends Mikayla Smith & Kailey Gamble

Incoming freshmen Kailey Gamble (left) and Mikayla Smith take a break Saturday afternoon while moving into their North Texas dorm room.

Today is move-in day for many incoming college freshmen across the country and for best friends Mikayla Smith and Kailey Gamble from Moore, Oklahoma, it was their first day as roommates as the pair settled into their 2nd floor dorm room at the University of North Texas.

While each had family helping them move in furniture such as a fridge and TV, the athletes who first met more than a decade ago playing softball and basketball together, are now ready to face the next big stage in their life.

Kailey (left) and Mikayla have a lot of unpacking to do this weekend after family helped them move 2 1/2 hours from home!

“I’m excited,” Kailey said, “but it will be different to not have my parents around all the time.”

North Texas, located in Denton, Texas, in the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex, is about two and a half hours away from the players’ home leading Mikayla to add: “It’s not too close, but it’s not too far either!”

The two drove their own cars down and will know several others in the Mean Green recruiting class that is 10 signees big.

Mikayla, who also goes by “Kayla,” played on the Impact Gold – Middlebrook 18U team along with incoming UNT freshman catcher Ashlyn Walker, outfielder Lexi Cobb and Jaden infielder Middlebrook.

Kailey and pitcher/first baseman Jamie Worthington both competed for the Oklahoma Athletics – Madden team.

Mikayla is a middle infielder who graduated from South Moore (Moore, Oklahoma) High and won a 6A state title her freshman year while Kailey played first base at West Moore High and won two state championships, one in the spring of her sophomore year in slowpitch softball and another in the fall of her junior year in fastpitch.

Back home, though they played on competing club and high school teams, the two would “hang out every day as best friends,” according to Mikayla.

Now, they get to continue their time together on and off the field at the college level, but first they have to finish getting unpacked and settled in.

Kailey put it best as family members darted back and forth behind them moving boxes and furniture.

“It’s raucous here!”
