What a run for the Mojo – Lewis team which went 8-0 after not having played a tourney since July.

This weekend we are tracking a lot of top travel ball teams playing in top tourneys such as The Ultimate Challenge in California.

Last week, the prestigious Show Me the Money tournament took place in Newberry, Fla., and on Friday Extra Inning Softball we spotlighted the 18U winner, the Sparks Elite  – Ross/Bain squad that  went 8-0 in the talent-laden tourney.

The 16U division saw a similar undefeated run as the Mojo – Lewis squad won its own $10,000 check after also finishing 8-0 and outscoring opponents  42 to nine, this despite not having played together for months.

““This was our first tournament since July,”  Head Coach Brittany Lewis explains. “We had two practices prior to this event but I could tell the team looked strong and ready. They have been working hard in the off season to prepare.”

The two new pitchers, Jordan Young (left) and Addison DeRoche, came up HUGE in the 2023 Show Me The Money tourney.

One of the keys to the winning it all at Show Me the Money last weekend was the outstanding pitching by the Mojo pitching staff. Looking into the numbers deeper, you see that the Mojo pitching staff only allowed 1.1 runs per game and Coach Lewis and her staff were especially impressed with how the new pitching pickups played.

‘We welcomed three new members to our Mojo-Lewis team in the off season,” Coach Lewis emphasized, and all three did great this weekend: 2027 pitcher Addison DeRoche from Maine, 2027 outfielder/catcher Ainsley McMullen (Tenn.), and 2026 pitcher utility Jordan “Jo” Young (Ala.).

“This was our first tournament since July,” Coach Lewis explains. “We have had two practices prior to this event and I could tell the team looked strong and ready. They have been working hard in the off season to prepare.”

The pair of new pitchers – DeRoche and Young—combined for 32 strikeouts in the tourney in 31.1 innings  and only gave up seven earned runs and four walks between themselves.

“Addison DeRoche and Jo Young had stellar performances in the circle this weekend,” agreed their head coach, “and they honestly looked like veteran leaders on our team.”

But not everything was a cakewalk, either.

In the first bracket game, the Mojo had to come from behind in its last at-bat to get a good start in the winners’ bracket.
