Last week, we ran an article with the title Why It’s Not Looking Good for PGF Nationals This Summer, a question we get asked at least five times per day: “Is PGF still on?” as well as “Will there be any softball in California this summer?”
Coaches and local authorities in California privately—and reluctantly—admit the happenings for any sporting event this summer in the state look bleak and many have made alternate plans to compete at events outside of the Golden State.
Yesterday, Orange County—with cities such as Huntington Beach, Irvine, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Fountain Valley, etc. and is the geographical center of not just PGF, but fastpitch softball historically—issued a statement that makes it look like there won’t be any softball this summer, at least on public sites and fields, unless there’s a loophole we don’t know about.
We reached out to the OC Public Information Manager, Molly Nichelson, who is the contact for the release below, and she said: “The State has not posted explicit guidance on its website prohibiting youth sports. The County is, however, aware of a ruling that was made by the California Department of Public Health regarding youth practices stating that they are not allowed based on current guidance.
We know that at least one softball event that was scheduled for this weekend in Orange Co. has subsequently been cancelled because of these new county guidelines after it was learned that one of the fields was on county property.

Youth Sports Practices Postponed in Orange County Due to New State Guidance
Santa Ana, Calif. (July 8, 2020) – The State of California has recently amended its guidance regarding youth sports practices, team drills and training and will no longer allow them to occur throughout the state.
The State’s Day Camps and Fitness Facility guidelines were used by counties across the state to allow for youth sports practices, team drills and training.
At this time, youth sports activities including practices will be postponed until further direction is provided from the State.
Currently, there is no scheduled time by which the state will re-open youth sports. The County of Orange allowed youth sports practice, team drills and training to re-open on June 15, 2020.
