Event Recap: Day 1 at Top Club National in Oklahoma City

Bailey Dowling had an impressive home run on Wednesday for Georgia Impact – Lewis in the openng game Wednesday.

The Top Club National kicked off Wednesday in Oklahoma City with over 100 top teams from around the country entered in the 18U, 16U and 14U age divisions and runs through Saturday when the championship games will be held.

As we covered in last week’s preview, the event is loaded with top teams including 21 who were ranked in the Extra Elite Eighty Club Rankings at the 18U division (a late add was #10 Firecrackers – TJ), 19 teams at 16U and 15 in 14U.

Because the age divisions play on three sites, that are fairly spread out in the OKC area—18Us in Choctaw; 16U in Moore and 14U in Shawnee, Oklahoma—with about 20-30 minutes apart, I was at the fields on Wednesday, will spend Thursday watch the 16Us and Friday the 14Us.

The first game for every team was an “exhibition” game and was more to get players into games and get the wrinkles ironed out. The second and third games kicked off Pool action which will continue into Thursday play.

The caliber of team and individual talent is outstanding… here are some thoughts from Day 1 watching 18U games all day Wednesday.

* The best-looking teams I saw on Wednesday were the Aces Fastpitch coached by Ryan Taylor and Georgia Impact led by Patrick Lewis.

The Aces looked great in the first pool game (Pool A) beating last year’s PGF 18U Premier champs, the A’s – Mercado/Smith team, 6-0, with a standout performance by shortstop Kinsey Fiedler (Washington) who had a home run and 4 RBIs and catcher Ava Bredwell who was 2-for-2 in the win.

Mac Morgan, the power pitcher going to Arizona State looked great with 5 K’s and uncommitted 2021 pitcher Kenzie Schopfer had 8 K’s on the day earlier in a win.

The Georgia Impact might be better than last year’s team which made it to the title game at PGF. The hitting is outstanding—Bailey Dowling, the U-19 USA Softball Team Member hit a mammoth home run in the exhibition game—and the pitching solid with Alex Salter one of the best aces at 18U.

She’s headed to Alabama as is Dowling and OF Dallis Goodnight, which should make Tide fans very happy in the future. MIF Raigan Barrett has looked good all summer too.
