Extra Star Power: New Jersey 2024 Outfielder Lisey St. Jean… Newtown Rock 18U Speedster “Can Handle Anything Hit Her Way”

Lisey St. Jean is one of the top leadoff hitters in the country at her age level both in high school and club play.

Newtown Rock Gold-Garvey CF Lisey St.Jean, #30 in the 2024 Extra Elite 100, has quickly established herself as one of the premier speedsters in the Northeast after a stellar freshman year at Paul VI High in Haddonfield, NJ.

Mariah Penta

Auburn-committed MIF Mariah Penta, #15 in the 2023 Extra Elite 100, is blown away by St. Jean’s leadoff skills.

“Lisey is an amazing person off the field, very kind and carefree,” Penta said. “She always wants others to succeed and plays a HUGE role on our team as the leadoff hitter. The second she steps on the field she is absolutely zoned in and has such a confidence in the box. But seriously she is one of the fastest people I’ve seen at the 18U level. At practice, she smokes all of us when we are being timed running the bases, it’s crazy. I know she is going to be a great player that makes an impact wherever she goes. I truthfully love Lisey as a friend and teammate.”

St. Jean’s defensive skills really stand out to Maryland-committed P Julia Shearer, #33 in the 2023 Extra Elite 100.

“I’ve played with Lisey for about five years and she is exactly the type of player you want on your team,” Shearer said. “I’ve seen her run into fences and sacrifice herself just to make a play, and whether I’m pitching or playing the outfield with her, I’m confident that she can handle anything hit her way. She’s one of the youngest players on our team, but she doesn’t act that way and is really able to play her role out of the leadoff spot. You don’t see that kind of talent very often, especially for girls her age, and she definitely has a bright future in her softball career.”

Lisey had a .442 on-base percentage for Newtown Rock Gold last Fall and then proceeded to steal 26 bases.

Maryland-bound P Genevieve Ebaugh, #52 in the 2022 Extra Elite 100, appreciates St. Jean’s speed.

“I couldn’t be luckier to have Lisey as a centerfielder when I’m pitching,” Ebaugh said. “She is fast as lightning and can track a ball with ease, she’s not afraid to get dirty and will dive through any fence. As a leadoff hitter, she is a huge challenge for the opposing pitcher as she can bunt, slap and power slap. Once she is on base expect her to run because she is as close to an automatic run as it comes. Lisey is a dedicated hard worker and she is kind to everyone! So glad we are able to play together with our Rock family.”

Tell us about your travel team/organization and how you became involved with them…
At second year 12U, I joined Coach Ryan York’s Banshee’s Fastpitch team, which were known as one of the strongest 12U/14U teams in Northeast and one of the strongest in the country. I was lucky to be part of a team that was so talented, successful and played a challenging schedule. As we moved to 14U, Coach York partnered with Coach Joe Garvey’s Newtown Rock program. We played our 1st year 14U as Banshee’s and moved to Newtown Rock as its 14U National team during our second year 14U season.

Coach Garvey’s Newtown Rock program is one of the best in the country and Coach Garvey and Coach Dan Santelli (Associate Head Coach) brought us into their development programs and worked closely with our team. Our planned second year 14U season was, unfortunately, cut short due to COVID-19 (we had a berth to PGF Premier), but Coach Garvey’s program and development let me still grow my game despite the pandemic. We were still able to play some tournaments in the Southeast and I had a very strong summer with our 14U National team. At the end of our 14U season, five of us moved to Coach Garvey’s 18U Gold team.

What were some of the training methods and workouts you did to stay busy during the stay-at-home orders because of the coronavirus situation?
It was challenging, but I’m lucky to have been in the situation with my sister (Villanova-bound SS Lilly St. Jean, #67 in the 2022 Extra Elite 100) so we were able to work a lot together through the pandemic. We have both been working remotely with Austin Wasserman and his High-Level Throwing program, so we would throw and work out daily with his throwing and strength programs.

Over this time, I was able to improve my throwing pattern, strengthen my arm and increase my overhand velocity to 70 mph. As my primary position has been outfield, I really wanted to work towards an elite arm, which would elevate my game. Lilly and I would help each other with “every days”/glove work, do a lot of tee work, and go to a local field almost daily.

I was also fortunate to still be able to work with Jimmy Mullis and even traveled routinely to Georgia for workouts. I spent a lot of time working with Coach Jimmy and making improvements to really take my game to the next level and develop all of my tools from slapping to full swing. I also focused on my speed with my sprint coach and did lots of speed-related strength work. I kept very busy and tried to use the time to my advantage!
