The Four Principles Behind The SERV™ Methodology
At Extra Inning Softball, we believe the credibility of any rankings system is directly tied to the integrity of its evaluation process. A rankings number, by itself, tells only part of the story. What matters most is the work, research, discussion, and verification that produced it.
That’s why we developed The SERV™ Methodology—a comprehensive evaluation framework designed to create greater consistency, transparency, and accountability throughout every rankings cycle.
SERV is more than an acronym.
It represents our philosophy that no athlete should be evaluated based on a single opinion, one impressive weekend, or a brief review period. Instead, rankings should be earned through a thorough process that combines technology, experienced evaluators, research, and verification.
The inspiration for The SERV™ Methodology came from many places.
One was the movie Moneyball, which challenged conventional thinking by demonstrating the importance of building a repeatable process rather than relying solely on instinct or reputation. While softball is different from baseball, the underlying principle remains the same: the best decisions come from combining multiple sources of information—not from one person’s opinion.
Just as importantly, SERV was built through countless conversations, reflection, and prayer. As the owner of Extra Inning Softball, I wanted to create a methodology that honored the athletes and families who place their trust in us. Every major change we’ve made has been guided by one question:
“Is this what’s best for the athlete?”
That question continues to shape every rankings cycle.
S — Software
The first pillar of SERV is Software.
Technology allows us to organize athlete nominations, historical evaluations, rankings data, committee notes, and supporting information in a structured and consistent manner.
As our rankings have grown nationwide, software has become an essential tool for maintaining organization, improving efficiency, and ensuring that valuable information remains accessible throughout the evaluation process.
Technology does not replace people.
It simply allows our evaluators to work from better information.
E — Evaluation
The second pillar is Evaluation.
Every rankings cycle includes input from Extra Inning Softball’s National Rankings Committee and Regional Leaders.
Rather than relying on one evaluator, SERV brings together multiple experienced voices from across the country. Our evaluators include individuals with backgrounds as Division I athletes, professional players, Division I coaches, and respected softball leaders.
Healthy discussion is encouraged.
Different perspectives strengthen the process.
The goal is not to create unanimous agreement—it is to ensure every athlete receives thoughtful consideration before final decisions are made.
R — Research
Research is where an athlete’s complete story begins to take shape.
Every nomination provides valuable information that helps our committee better understand an athlete’s accomplishments, level of competition, growth, and future potential.
Research includes reviewing:
- Nomination forms
- Statistics
- Strength of schedule
- Tournament performance
- Video
- Coach recommendations
- Organizational input
- Additional supporting information submitted by families
Statistics matter. So does context. Numbers alone rarely tell the entire story.
Our goal is to evaluate athletes as completely as possible, recognizing that performance must always be viewed within the context of competition, consistency, development, and long-term projection.
V — Verification
The final pillar of SERV is Verification.
Before rankings are published, our committee reviews athlete information, confirms important details when necessary, discusses difficult placements, and evaluates the rankings as a whole for consistency.
Verification is one of the most important steps in the process.
It represents our commitment to accountability.
While no rankings system will ever be perfect, we believe every athlete deserves the confidence of knowing her evaluation was reviewed through the same established process before publication.
More Than Rankings
SERV was created to build greater trust. Families deserve to understand how decisions are made. Coaches deserve confidence that every athlete is evaluated using consistent standards. Athletes deserve to know their accomplishments have been thoughtfully considered.
Will everyone agree with every ranking? Probably not. Reasonable people can—and will—have different opinions.
What should never be in question, however, is whether there was a documented, consistent, and transparent process behind those decisions. That is the purpose of The SERV™ Methodology.
It represents our commitment to continuous improvement, integrity, and accountability. Because at Extra Inning Softball, our goal has never been to publish rankings as quickly as possible. Our goal has always been to publish rankings that families can trust.
The rankings matter.
But the integrity behind them matters even more.
