At Extra Inning Softball, rankings are the result of layered conversations, data review, and collective evaluation. As we launched the Class of 2029 rankings this week our team recently gathered for a Hot Topics Roundtable discussion to break down trends, offer feedback, updates, and key insights shaping this class.
🎥 Full video discussion is included below.
We also disused some exciting new announcements recently made over this last week. View the Class of 2029 rankings schedule HERE!
The discussion went beyond surface-level rankings. Our staff examined how coaches are evaluating athletes, how regional depth continues to evolve, and how academic excellence is increasingly intersecting with on-field performance.
This roundtable also included important announcements tied to the current rankings cycle, giving families and coaches a clearer picture of what these lists represent—and what they do not. View rankings news HERE!

Coach Regional Feedback
One of the most revealing data points came from how coaches distributed their Top 50 regional feedback among the 1,168 athletes we ranked in the Class of 2029.
| Regional Rank Range | Count | % of Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | 414 | 35.48% |
| 11–20 | 283 | 24.25% |
| 21–30 | 190 | 16.28% |
| 31–40 | 120 | 10.28% |
| 41–50 | 160 | 13.71% |
| Total | 1,167 | 100% |
According to coach submissions, 35.48 percent believed the athlete they nominated belonged in the top ten of their region. Another 24.25% felt their nominee fit within the top 20 regionally, while 16.28% placed their athlete in the top 30. An additional 10.28% of coaches identified their player as a top 40 regional athlete, and 13.71% believed their nominee ranked within the top 50 of the region.
Key takeaway: Nearly 60% of athletes were clustered within the Top 20 regionally, reinforcing what our team discussed at length—this class has exceptional depth at the top, with meaningful separation often occurring through consistency, development trajectory, and competitive environments rather than a single standout metric.
National Tier Placement: What Coaches Are Signaling
At the national level, coaches were also asked to identify where their nominated athletes best fit within Extra Inning Softball’s established national tiers. Based on the nominations received, 61.27% of coaches believed their athlete belonged in the Extra Elite 100, placing them among the nation’s top athletes.
Another 26.82% felt their player projected within the National Extra Select 101–200 range, while 11.91% identified their athlete as a National Extra Prospect 201–300 level player.
| National Tier | Count | % of Total |
|---|---|---|
| Extra Elite 100 | 715 | 61.27% |
| Extra Select 101-200 | 313 | 26.82% |
| Extra Prospect 201-300 | 139 | 11.91% |
| Total | 1,167 | 100% |
It is important to note that these tiers allow for no ties, reinforcing the competitive precision and intentional separation built into the Extra Inning Softball ranking process.

Regional Distribution of the Class of 2029
The Extra Inning Softball rankings committee also analyzed how athletes were distributed across regions:
View region map HERE
| Region | Athlete Count |
|---|---|
| Region 1 (Northeast) | 123 |
| Region 2 (Southeast) | 432 |
| Region 3 (Midwest) | 289 |
| Region 4 (Southwest) | 177 |
| Region 5 (Mountain) | 15 |
| Region 6 (West) | 132 |
| Total | 1,168 |
This regional breakdown helps provide important context for how talent is distributed nationwide within the Class of 2029.

Performance Averages Across the Class
To ground rankings in performance, our team reviewed aggregate statistical averages across the full group of 1,168 evaluated athletes:
- Average Batting Average (BA): .384
- Average On-Base Percentage (OBP): .459
- Average Fielding Percentage: .919
- Average ERA: 3.02
These benchmarks help contextualize production without reducing athletes to numbers—a point emphasized repeatedly during the discussion. Metrics inform rankings; they do not define athletes.

Academic Excellence: A Defining Strength of This Class
One of the most compelling takeaways from the roundtable was the academic profile of the Class of 2029. As the recruiting landscape continues to evolve, our team emphasized that academic consistency remains a powerful differentiator—one that often opens doors just as quickly as on-field performance. The data from this class reinforces that message in a meaningful way.
- 150 National Distinguished Prospects (3.5–3.74 GPA)
- 227 National Select Achievers (3.75–3.99 GPA)
- 723 Elite Scholars (4.0+ GPA)
This level of academic excellence continues to raise the standard for what it means to be a nationally ranked student-athlete.

Why This Roundtable Matters
The Hot Topics Roundtable wasn’t about defending rankings—it was about explaining them. Our team addressed feedback we’ve received, clarified updates to the evaluation process, and shared insights families often don’t get to hear publicly.
As rankings roll out region by region from February 9 through March 11, this conversation provides essential context for understanding how and why athletes are placed where they are—today and moving forward.
