LOS ANGELES – The Shelly Carlin UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez announced the addition of two staff positions, hiring assistant coach Rob Schweyer and naming Will Oldham as the volunteer director of player development and data analytics.

Oldham served on the 2023 staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Schweyer will oversee the Bruins’ pitching staff.

Schweyer has been an elite competitor in men’s professional fast pitch the last 24 years, earning International Softball Congress (ISC) All-World First Team acclaim three times in 2000, 2001 and 2010 and second team his rookie year in 1999 as a member of the Waterloo Twins. He won two ISC World Tournament Championships with the Broken Bow Travelers in 2001 and another with The Farm Tavern in 2007. Schweyer has 30 and counting ISC career wins and is still playing for the Fargo Kegel Black Knights. On Aug. 15, 2023, it was announced Schweyer will be inducted into the ISC Hall of Fame.

“Rob will have an immediate impact on our pitching staff with his knowledge of the biomechanics of pitching as well as his mastery of spin to create movement through the zone,” Inouye-Perez said. “He will work with the pitchers and throw fierce batting practice to our Bruins. It’s exciting to get Rob into the college game as I believe he will add a competitive edge to our elite student-athletes. We welcome Rob, his wife Janina and his two sons, Blake and Brody.”

Schweyer has traveled all over the globe in his softball expertise. He competed for the Canada men’s fastpitch national team from 2000-2004. From 2006-2008, Schweyer was the pitching and strength and conditioning coach for the Chinese Olympic softball team which placed fifth in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

He has worked the last 14 years as a personal instructor. From 2011-2014, Schweyer was a trainer for USA Preps Softball Academy in Camarillo, Calif. Since then, he has worked for his own athletic training organization based in Hermosa Beach, RS Sports Training, where he helped develop UCLA softball pitchers Megan Faraimo (2019-2023), Brooke Yanez (2023) and Taylor Tinsley (2023-Pres.).

Schweyer, 48 years old, was born in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, and attended University of Western Ontario before leaving to play professional hockey in the East Coast Hockey League (EHL) from 1999-2008 which overlapped with his professional softball career.

Transitioning from his role as volunteer assistant coach to volunteer director of player development and data analytics is Oldham. In year one with the program in 2023, Oldham specialized in scouting and with the slappers position group. Oldham, who also competes as a pitcher in men’s fastpitch, led UCLA’s live batting practice sessions.

“Will was extremely valuable to our staff last season,” Inouye-Perez said. “He will continue to assist in planning and training to be more efficient with the technology in the game today. Will also has great relationships with the student-athletes and will help create individual player development plans, including the establishment of key performance indicators. We are fortunate to have his commitment to our student-athletes and program.”

Oldham, 37 years old, was born in Indio, California.
