EXTRA INNING SOFTBALL

The majority landed on a gray area: the logo can sway you, but responsibility still sits with the athlete. That tension is exactly where today’s discussion lives.

Jayden Mount x Laina Holmgren: Let’s talk about it

Jayden kicks us off: brand prestige is real—TV exposure, NIL potential, packed stadiums. But a big name without a real role can stall a career fast. What wins long term: fit, development, and a path to the field.

Laina—bringing the college coach lens—adds that “roster math” is real: depth charts, redshirts, and portal movement can turn a dream logo into a waiting room. Coaches want athletes who choose a program for the right reasons: staff relationships, player development, academics, and culture—not just the sweatshirt.

Take it to the dugout

Athletes: list your non-negotiables (role, development plan, academic fit). Parents: help research, don’t steer with fear of missing out. Travel coaches: present all options with context, not just the shiniest logo.

This is where the madness starts. Drop your take below, tag a teammate, and tell us: What matters more—role or brand?
