On Friday, we led off our Signings/Commits section of The Last Inning column with news that Mariah Penta, the talented junior middle infielder/outfielder with Newtown Rock Gold – Garvey, had committed to Auburn.
As Assistant Coach Dan Santelli wrote to tell us:
“Mariah was highly sought after by many strong D1 programs and will be joining her sister Maddie at Auburn.”
Earlier this year, Mariah was named as a Top #15 prospect in the 2023 Extra Elite 100; here’s part what we wrote about her at the time when she played for another top club program in the East:
T-15—Mariah Penta, MIF, PA Chaos 18U – Spina
Mariah is the younger sister of Maddie Penta, the 6-foot-2 freshman pitcher at Auburn who throws upwards of 70 mph and having an older sister who has worked with her the last five years has paid dividends for the younger Penta. She’s a natural hitter who, despite being among the youngest on Joe Spina’s Gold team for the past two seasons, has risen to the top of the batting order with her consistent bat. Not surprising, she can hit any and all pitching shown by her batting average of .402 last Fall and led the team in both hits and doubles.
Older sister Maddie was put to heavy use by the Tigers as a Freshman in 2021, recording 105 strikeouts in 88 innings and finishing the season with a 9-9 record and 2.78 ERA on her way to earning All-SEC Freshman Team honors as well as making the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.
Younger sibling Mariah has continued to shine too and this fall had eight doubles, three home runs and 25 RBIs for the 25-8 Newton Rock 18U team.
