Recruiting Spotlight: 2023 Extra Elite 100 Catcher Jasmyn Burns… Future Backstop for the Buckeyes!

Jasmyn Burns, a Top 25-ranked player in the Class of 2023, is a home run hitter at the plate and a strong-armed catcher behind it.

As recruits who’ve come through the recruiting process often say: “When you know, you know!”

That was the case for Jasmyn Burns, the outstanding backstop who has been one of the top players in the current junior class for several years—and as you’ll learn shortly, she’s been tracked by colleges going back to when she was 13.

Jasmyn made her official visit to Columbus, Ohio to check out Ohio State and fell in love with everything about the school but still took several other trips to make sure before committing in the middle of October:

The junior was rated at #21 in the 2023 Extra Elite 100 rankings which came out in May of this year. In her bio, it said:

Jasmyn, or “Jazzy,” brings to the fields a big bat mixed with a great defensive game behind the dish. Her glove and arm make the California standout one of the versatile players in the 2023 class and one of the most feared backstops in the class.  Jazzy has the ability to take over games from the batter’s box where she hit .400 over the Fall with 12 home runs and from behind the dish where she threw out 14 of 18 steal attempts.

She’s already had a hugely successful high school and club career.

Now playing on the prestigious A’s – Mercado/Smith 18U team this Fall, Jasmyn helped her 16U team win Boulder IDT and Triple Crown Nationals over the Summer as batted .500 in for the season with 21 home runs overall (and placed 1st in home runs at TCS Nationals and 2nd in RBIs at TCS Nationals).

Jazzy also helped her Murrieta Mesa High team out of Murrieta, California win the CIF South Western Division 1 League championship as she hit .475 at the prep level and had six home runs.

Here’s more on this two-way talent who’s sure to shine when she hits the Big Ten in two years…

What’s been at the top of the list of your favorite softball experiences so far?
Winning TCS Nationals after catching eight games on one of the hottest weekends in So Cal. It was so rewarding to take it all because I was exhausted, but I refused to let it show, I just kept pushing myself and I played on total adrenaline. It was the best feeling.

How did the Buckeye coaching staff first find you?
Ohio State Head Coach Kelly (Kovach Schoenly) told me on my official visit that she and Coach Mac (Jen McIntyre) first discovered me at the D9 showcase in Florida in 2018. I was 13 then and they told me I had made their list of prospects every year after that. It was pretty cool to hear that!

When did Ohio State actually offer you a scholarship?
They offered me a scholarship on my official visit.
