The state of Georgia concluded its fall high school softball season on Oct. 28 with champions being crowned in Class A Division I, Class A Division 2, Class 2A, Class 3A, Class 4A, Class 5A, Class 6A and Class 7A.
Georgia sponsors softball in eight classifications in the fall and the state championships were played at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Ga.
Class A Division I – Prince Avenue vs. Mt. Vernon
Prince Avenue and Mt. Vernon clashed on the diamond to determine the Georgia state champion in Class A Division I.
Prince Avenue won three games on the final day to capture its first softball state title in program history capped by a walk-off 6-5 win over Mt. Vernon.
Berkeley Dunn hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Wolverines to the state title.
Class A Division 2 – Lanier County vs. Glascock County
The matchup to decide the state championship in Class A Division 2 was contested between Lanier County and Glascock County.
The Trojans used two home runs and the pitching of Jaden Benefield to post a 6-2 victory and claim their first state championship title.
Lanier broke a scoreless game in the fourth inning when Benefield tripled and scored on a bunt by Sayla Schade.
Glascock rallied to take the lead when Jacey Usry hit a two-run home run giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Brilee Burkhalter belted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning putting Lanier in front to stay.
The Trojans tacked on a home run from Jacie Faircloth and an RBI single from Burkhalter to up the lead to 6-2.
Class 2A – Appling County vs. Jeff Davis
The Class 3 state title matchup featured Appling County and Jeff Davis.
Appling County won its first championship in 2021 and upended defending-champion Jeff Davis 4-3 in the championship series to win the program’s second title. Appling began the day defeating Banks County 2-1 in the winner’s bracket finals, earning a championship berth.
The second state title for Appling County came in dramatic fashion as the Pirates got a walk-off base hit to secure the title.
With Mellisa Nails on first base, Jeff Davis opted to intentionally walk Presley Harrison and Samantha Lewis followed with a game-winning single.
Harrison homered earlier in the game for Appling County, while Jenna Miles homered for Jeff Davis.
