The state of Nebraska concluded its fall high school softball season on Oct. 16 with champions being crowned in A, B and C classifications.
Nebraska sponsors softball in three classifications and the state championships were played at Connie Claussen Field in Omaha, Neb.
Class A – Papillion-La Vista vs. Millard North
Papillion-La Vista and Millard North clashed on the diamond to determine the Nebraska state champion in Class A.
Papillion-La Vista overcame a 2-1 deficit by scoring five times in the top of the fifth inning on its way to a 10-3 victory over Millard North to capture its 17th state title in program history.
Kholey Hamblen had a double during the five-run inning and Avery Wolfe added a two-run home run to spark the comeback for the Monarchs.
Wolfe finished the game with three hits, while Presley Ivener also had three hits.
Millard North broke a 1-1 deadlock in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jaelyn Swift homered giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
Class B – Grand Island Northwest vs. Blair
The matchup to decide the state championship in Class B was contested between second-seeded Grand Island Northwest and top-seeded Blair.
In a game that featured nine lead changes, junior Kyra Ray hit a walk-off single lifting Grand Island Northwest to a 9-8 victory over Blair to capture its second straight state title.
Reyse Zobel led the Vikings at the plate as she finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Lily Martinez was 3-for-4 with a run driven in and Kamrynn Mings and Jolie O’Hara each recorded two hits.
Bria Scott led the Bears offense as she was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Nessa McMillen finished the game 3-for-4 with a run batted in.
Leah Chance homered to put Blair up 8-7 in the top of the sixth inning, but Grand Island Northwest tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth and won it with the walk-off single from Ray.
